I see a lot of people complaining about how their sciatica pain won’t go away no matter what they do. Well, I’m probably not going to make a lot of friends by saying this, but if you are still suffering from sciatica despite doing “everything,” then there are probably some simple things that you aren’t doing. Here are 3 common things that people often neglect or try to shortcut. You Are Not Stretching I know that you’re busy. Heck, who isn’t busy these days? With all the rush of going to work, preparing meals, and trying to find an odd moment here or there to spend with your family or friends it can be hard to find the time to do all those stretches you secretly know you should be doing. But, seriously how long does stretching take? I would be a vast over-estimation to say that they take 30 minutes. But I’m sure you can probably find the time to watch at least 30 minutes of television a day. Why not do your stretches while you’re watching TV? You Are Not Correcting Your Diet Most people know that inflammation is a big issue if you have sciatica. But not too many people know that your diet can actually be used to combat inflammation in your body. Foods that contain trans fat, saturated fats, and are high on the glycemic index are not good for inflammation (in fact, they’re bad for you in a lot of other ways too, but I’ll save that for another day). A lot of people are busy and simply just need to grab food on the go. Fast food and pre-packaged microwave-able meals are easy and convenient, but they are also full of the things you want to avoid. Instead, you should be getting foods rich in vitamin D, antioxidants, and omega 3 acids. I know that cooking can take a lot of time and trying to find recipes can make things even more of a challenge. But if you simply memorize a small handful of easy recipes, you can quickly whip up a large batch of meals that will help your inflammation and eat them over several days. You Are Relying on Painkillers I know you’re in pain, and I know you can’t just put your life on hold to recover. You still need to make money and pay those bills, after all. But let’s be honest here. We both know that painkillers are not a solution. I understand taking them to get through the day, but don’t confuse a lack of pain with a solution to the problem. Just because the pain is gone doesn’t mean that you still have tight muscles or bulging discs in your body that are still irritating a numb sciatic nerve. If you just numb the pain and keep on with business as normal, you’re only going to make the problem worse. If you want to get rid of the sciatica, you can’t cut corners. I know that life is busy and hectic. It can be easy to say to yourself that you’re too busy today to stretch or eat right and just pop a few pills with the hope that tomorrow is different. But let’s be honest. Nothing is going to change, unless it changes today. Set aside the time to do what you already know you need to do and make sure you can get rid of your sciatica once and for all.
