There is no denying that prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in the U.S. According to statistics released by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, more than a million people in America struggle with OxyContin abuse or addiction; one of the most over-prescribed and overused prescription painkillers available.
Making the decision to get help to stop an OxyContin addiction is difficult, but it is a step in the right direction to a healthier you. As you begin the journey on the road to recovery, it will be helpful to understand that you will experience three clearly defined stages: the withdrawal stage; the happy stage; and the active recovery stage.
First Stage: Withdrawal
When you stop taking OxyContin, it is very likely that you will experience withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms will vary depending on how much of the drug you have been taking and how long you have been using. While some people may try to quit their abuse or addiction “cold turkey” and suffer through withdrawal symptoms, you should know that statistics show that people who remain comfortable throughout the withdrawal process are more likely to be successful in recovery.
With that said, most doctors recommend medical detox and even more recommend IV therapy medical detox. IV therapy medical detox is a process that uses intravenous therapy to flush the chemical toxins from your system that have accumulated from your OxyContin drug abuse.
As you go through the withdrawal process, you may experience:
• Severe bone and muscle pain
• Uncontrollable leg movements
• Chills and/or sweating
• Insomnia and diarrhea
• Hallucinations
Opting for a detox that can help you through the symptoms while keeping you as comfortable as possible will get you a step closer to addiction recovery.
Second Stage: Happy
After you safely and successfully complete detox and withdrawal, many people in recovery experience a period where they are excessively happy about recovery. After the withdrawal symptoms end, it is not unusual to feel as if you are over a big hurdle and that you can’t go wrong. However, the happiness is generally short lived and is followed by feelings of insecurity, an emotional crash and a deeper understanding that the road to recovery is an ongoing effort and sometimes a struggle.
Third Stage: Active Recovery
The road to overcoming OxyContin abuse or addiction involves active recovery. Active recovery means that you make a conscious effort to resist returning to drug use on a daily basis. Many of those in recovery do this by becoming active in a 12 Step program or other support group; by gaining support from family and friends; engaging in activity that does not involve old habits; and looking for ways to build their confidence and positive demeanor.
There may be times when you may want to throw in the towel, but staying the course and leaning on your support group when times get tough can help you through and keep you on the right track.
