Today, costs are higher and prospects are bombarded with more advertising messages than they can absorb. As a result, response rates have dropped - in some industries they are only one-third to one-half of previous levels.
The solution to this problem is called “target marketing.” With target marketing, we spend more on each prospect communi¬cation, but because we have qualified the audience so precisely, we run fewer ads, and put fewer packages into the mail. 4. Practice Integrity and Congruence in Your Marketing Communications.
The best virtue you can achieve in advertising is congruence. By “congruence.” I mean the message communicated should match the reality of what the customer can expect at the point-of-service.
Unfortunately, examples of advertising that lack congruence are all too available. When a bank advertises that "long lines are a thing of the past,” and you go to that bank and wait in a long line. that's incongruent. When a company promises a full-satisfaction guarantee, and you practically have to beg to get your money back, that's incongruent. Customers will never forgive you if you betray their faith, so you are far better off leaving inaccurate messages out of your copy.
To be an effective marketer, make sure all your advertising carries a message of integrity and congruence.
