It's tough to lose weight, especially today. There's plenty standing in your way - societal pressures, a sedentary lifestyle, a lazy metabolism, hunger pangs . . . and then when you go to the gym, all those flat-bellied women stare at you as if your gut's hanging halfway down to your knees. It's easy to think about giving up when faced with all these obstacles. Never fear - follow these tips and keep your motivation high! Make the New You More Real by Seeing It! Were your school days your best days in terms of the shape you were in? If that's so, outstanding! Find some old pictures of yourself and use them for inspiration. You'll remember how it felt to have a fit, well-toned body, and how you were able to do so much with that body. Those of us who weren't really all that fit when we were younger can still see our new bodies. Don't rush through this exercise - take the time to really see all of your new body. Don't set unrealistic deadlines and goals. A pound or two a week is a realistic and reasonable goal. Make a Serious Determination You'll feel the depth of your commitment a little more if you have some "skin in the game." Buy yourself a nice article of clothing, pants perhaps, in the size you want to achieve and hang it where you'll see it every day - like right there in your bedroom. Nobody enjoys wasting money, and so these pants, or whatever they are, will be a constant reminder to you of your goal. It's surprising how spending a little money on an anticipated goal can help you accomplish that goal. With A Little Help From My Friends Frankly, there are many tasks we need to do that if we're left alone to do them, often won't get done. Working out is one of them. Now think of that same scenario, only you go to the gym with a buddy with whom you regularly work out. It's easier to live up to things like doing your workouts when there are others depending on you. An accountability friend is another option. It's a technique successful salespeople use in developing good habits. Every day, at the end of the day, shoot off a quick email to your accountability friend listing everything you ate that day. Temptation can be resisted, but this is a simple and effective way to reinforce your willpower. Accountability is a powerful motivator, and you'll find this to be one of the most effective tips you'll ever encounter. Recognize Accomplishment - and then Get Back to Work! Maybe your body's gotten so out of shape it's a source of shame. I understand. That doesn't call for punishment, though. A weight loss plan shouldn't be oppressive. If you've had a successful week with your weight loss program, give yourself a little treat in recognition of a job well done! Do something you really enjoy doing, and mark the day with your favorite dinner or a little dessert. We grow up equating food with all sorts of good things - if you cut yourself off from the little rewards and treats, you'll feel like you're cutting yourself off from all the good things in life as well. Some people who stick to a rigid plan without rewards will actually sabotage themselves. Letting an oppressive weight loss program make you miserable can be the worst thing that can happen to you, yet you can avoid it by permitting yourself a little indulgence once a week or so. You'll have an easier time achieving your weight loss goals if you make use of these motivating tips. Keep in mind, though, that if you drop the ball, you can't let yourself be consumed by guilt. Nobody's perfect, and plenty of good people have messed up on a weight loss program. Just get over it and get back to work!
