7 Exciting Activities to Help Spend Your Retirement Days In Complete Bliss
It’s not uncommon for senior citizens to be called baby boomers, retirees, empty nesters, middle-aged people or any other name that denotes that they are older and no longer have to worry with family or work responsibilities. When it’s you that has reached this stage in life where you no longer have to work or care for a family, you have many options as to how to spend your time. You dont' have to spend your time, sitting in a
recliner glider wondering where the days of yesteryear went.
This is your moment to run with the bulls, skydive with the best or do whatever you think will make you happy and feel young and strong. Don’t be misled by the retirement notion. You don’t have to sit around, waiting for the grandkids to come over so you can play a game of monopoly and bake cookies. You can still be the hip grandparent and spend time with those special kids in your life. However, if you find yourself struggling for things to do, consider these seven options below to help you get the most out of life.
Idea 1 – Become A Mentor For Young Minds
You’re a grandparent, which means you’ve seen and learned much in your lifetime. It’s this knowledge and past experience that you can give to future generations. You can make them aware of things they never knew existed. You can bring to life historical events that they weren’t around to see and help them to understand the world around them. If you don’t see your grandkids often, share this knowledge with other kids in your neighborhood or in a mentoring program. You can also mentor children by coaching a sports team; become their mentor and teach them all you know.
Idea 2 – Be A Sponge Of Knowledge
If you’re sharing your knowledge with your grandkids or mentoring children, then you’ll want to give them new food for thought that is relevant to their generation. This means you’ll need to learn new things as well. It may seem funny but this is where you’ll need to do some homework on things you think are worthwhile. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, learn a computer program or spin pottery, take a class. Then, once you’ve learned how to do this, share this knowledge with the children you know.
Idea 3 – Expand Your Horizons
One of the best things about your stage of life is the freedom to go on vacation anytime you want without having to ask for time off from your job or getting two rooms (one for you and your spouse and one for your kids) at the hotel. Consider hopping onto a plane to visit some exotic lands; don’t forget to take pictures so that you can share these memories with your family and friends. You can also share what you seen and learned with the kids you’re mentored (after all, they may want to hear about the country you visited). If you’re intimidated with the traveling process, why not go along with a tour group? If you don’t have the money it takes to go overseas, just take a local trip. Take a vacation in your own town. How many times have you thought about going to a tourist attraction in your own city? Now is your chance to explore these options. Any vacation that presents you with new surroundings can be interesting and exciting.
Idea 4 – Volunteering For A Worthwhile Cause
After you’ve spent your time mentoring kids, consider taking up volunteering for a cause. This can include children’s rights, animals’ rights, etc. When you decide to volunteer your time and efforts, you spend it with people who share similar views as you. These people can easily become friends, which allow you to socialize outside the cause. You also get the added benefit of knowing you’re doing something good for others.
Idea 5 – Be Conversational
Was there a time that you stopped hanging out with friends and family because you were just too busy? Now that you’re not so busy, you could reconnect with them and make new friends while you’re at it. Throw a barbecue at your home and invite everyone you want to reconnect with and the neighbors you have yet to meet. You can also join a club that will allow you to meet people who share the same interest that you have.
Idea 6 - Exercise and Be Healthy
You already know that exercising is good for you. After all, it releases the body’s endorphins, builds up your strength and improves the blood circulation. Make sure that the program you choose to go with is something that won’t hurt you in the long run. Speak with your doctor before you settle on an exercise routine. The kinds of things you can do include dancing, swimming, walking, running and skipping. You can also rock away in your recliner, as it helps to improve the circulation and blood flow.
Idea 7 - Cats, Dogs and More (Adopt A Pet Or Two)
If you love animals but don’t have one of your own, remedy that by adopting one. Animals make people feel as if they’ve got a purpose in life and they’ll give you lots of love without any reservations at all. If you live in a rental apartment, condo or home, you may have a clause that stipulates, “NO PETS”. If this is your situation and you still want to care for animals, do some volunteering at an animal shelter. These cats and dogs still need love and attention even though they are not adopted. You are liable to make all kinds of new animal friends if you give your time and love to an orphaned animal.
Retirement is your time to enjoy life and do things that you only dreamed you could when you were younger, working and taking care of a family. You can still be active and happy in your 60s, 70s, 80s, and yes, even your 90s. You’re not old until you decide you are. Keep moving and growing and you can be happy, healthy and have purpose in your life.
