Setting professional goals is a promise – a promise between an individual and his profession, or a promise of an organization/institution to its employees, or even a promise of an organization to its beneficiaries, of providing exemplary service through complete training of its manpower.
Saying this, setting a professional goal, is giving importance towards improving the future level performance of the individual or group. For this to happen, the individual/group must have had previous experience on how to set goals. If there is no experience, then the whole exercise of setting goals needs to be done as it is very crucial.
Having said that, what does learning to set a professional goal provide for an individual or group? It could be a case, where the individual, by himself or as a group, has already experienced with planning, either at a personal or career level. What is the need for another goal setting process?
When done by an institution or group, goal setting concentrates not only for the common good of the group, but also helps improve the individual’s outlook. If the procedure is facilitated by a good and experienced moderator, then the whole experience can be very refreshing, both to the individual and the group.
Most institute-initiated professional goal settings try to find out areas which require more development and then try to include these while setting goals. These areas are given prime focus and are related to the individual. This does not mean that the individual’s career plans are forgotten. This is just an addition to the continuously growing needs for an individual’s career plan. To an individual, the influence of this kind of group planning is amazing.
When done in a group, a professional goal setting offers various ideas to secure resources. Sometimes these are not even thought of by an individual.
Even the finance factor required by the group or individuals for planning their goals can be aided via the institution. A group can also identify a much more detailed list of obstacles that can arise while trying to achieve goals. This list will definitely be more comprehensive than if you were setting up the goal by yourself. In fact, the institution’s collective experience can be utilized as a source of motivation and perception.
There are more benefits to be earned from these institution-initiated professional goal settings, that attending some of the programs is never a waste of time and money.
This type of goal settings is not just limited to private organizations, but is more towards educational and religious institutions. In fact, nowadays, large as well as small corporations are trying their best to incorporate professional goal settings for their employees.
When there is a balance between the company’s career goal and the employees’ professional goals, it can be very helpful to both. This allows people to be more open and meticulous, thus helping us make the surroundings a much better place for professional growth.
The final and most important point is against those that promote individual professional goal setting. Even though setting personal goals is the starting point for every group goal setting, too much concentration on an individual goal can lead to ambitions turning into selfishness.
It is a true fact, many people still exist who only look for benefits from others, but never return the favor in any form. A sensitive person can still get some benefit from this. He/She can learn as to what not to do.
