Throughout the entire day, should you feel the urge or necessity to drink alcohol or over indulge in alcohol consumption or suffer from memory lapses associated to alcohol, then the bad news is that there’s a high possibility of being an alcoholic. But the good news is--there's a cure and with a good dose of perseverance, will power and patience, even the worst cases have been known to combat and conquer the disease. Alcoholism is a disease that’s a lot more usual than you may think. The tough thing about it is that there’s no established quantity of alcohol consumed that may consider you an alcoholic. Getting to grips with alcoholism means that you recognize or acknowledge the signs and symptoms but most important of it all, ultimately admitting to the fact that indeed, you are an alcoholic. The initial step then is controlling oneself and to help and support this, the next step is attending a self help group, like Alcoholics Anonymous or more popularly known as AA. The organization Alcoholics Anonymous consists of individuals who are presently or have been alcoholics before. This organization is just what it says, a bunch of unidentified alcoholics whose identities are not made public. Alcoholics Anonymous is a non profit making organization without any commercial interests whatsoever. So in effect you are free to come and go as you like because no records of membership are being kept and no one would stop or question you if you choose not to attend a meeting. The negative results or consequences of being an alcoholic could mean losing track of your life, such as losing your partner or your job, and the people in AA would be able to guide and support you through all of these sorts of problems and show you the way out. These individuals have the experience of knowing and understanding what life really means for an alcoholic and how hard it is to admit to it and finally put an end to it. The other good thing about Alcoholics Anonymous is that the members in it have already been through with what you are now facing and dealing with, so no one will look down on you, criticize you or judge you but they would provide you the strength to get back on track and finally move on and recover. This gives a favorable assistance and support when it comes to concentrating all your energies on ending your alcohol consumption as you could be assured that no one around you would see you as a loser but as a human being with courage. One natural fear is that you may come across a close friend, family member or relative or work colleague at your local Alcoholics Anonymous center and that your “secret” may be finally discovered. But don’t forget that you’re all in the same situation suffering the same problem and that this useful group would not reveal your identity on the outside and would put your best interests first.
