The recession has caused a lot many people to take stock of their investment decisions. With almost all conventional investment options being challenged, people are increasingly questioning on the prudence of real estate investment. A lot of people, who invested blindly in homes, saw their lifetime of savings vanish into thin air. The situation was so desperate that the elderly found themselves in a quagmire as they could neither afford to sell their home and move in to in-home care, nor could they afford to get home care! With their real estate options letting them down, it is completely agreeable that people stay away from them. But does real estate investment, especially commercial real estate investment deserve as much bad press as it has received? A lot of sour investments were a result of greed and unimaginative decisions; hence the blame on real estate for their financial woes is often misplaced. Well chosen portfolios rarely go wrong. They may not give you the yields that you expect, but will certainly continue to be the golden goose. There are several statistics to prove this. An article appearing on the National Real Estate Investor website claims that occupied spaces in offices has increased by about 12.6 million square feet since the beginning of 2011. The rents too have increased, albeit at a gradual rate. Real estate became a preferred choice for investment, after a lot of people saw their retirement savings going down the drain, thanks to the stock market crash. As 401k investments dint give much yield, they turned to alternative investments, vs. self direct IRA real estate investments. The best thing about investing in this market is that unlike stock markets, changes aren’t drastic. Market corrections happen over a period of time, giving investors enough time and opportunity to predict a trend and make efforts to come out from them. With a lot of properties being foreclosed and the given the insecurity of jobs, a lot of people now prefer to rent their homes rather than risk buying a home. Of course, the great American dream of owning a house hasn’t faded; it has merely taken a backseat. But your investment options are only as good as the real estate investor broker you choose. A trustworthy REIT ensures to guide you with the right investment options and warn you well in advance about the likely risks involved. Thus, real estate investment is indeed a good choice, provided you don’t lose track of your goals- to not earn money, but also keep them safe.
