Recently, I was sitting next to a woman at a meeting who turned to me and said, “Do you know any good gossip about any of these people here? I just love to hear the dirt on everyone.” Wow! What a way to go through life…looking for negativity and what she could find wrong with others and their lives. Do you think that hearing all the awful things that happens to others makes her feel better about herself and her life? It must. I can’t think of any other reason anyone would like to hear of the unfortunate things that happen to others,
People with low self-esteem often find fault with others. If we don’t like ourselves, we tend not to like other people either. We think if we can find something wrong with them, in comparison, we are downright great! We are actually attempting to make ourselves feel better at their expense.
Coincidentally, the traits we don’t like in other people are usually the very same traits we don’t like in ourselves. If you are a fault finder, here’s a homework assignment for you. For the next 24 hours, don’t express one negative thing about yourself or others.
You need to break the habit of negativity. When you see something you don’t like about someone, immediately make yourself look for something good about that same person. The more you look for good, the more you will find. And people like me will want to be around you because you bring positive energy to relationship instead of negativity.
