Often I hear people say they need to go to work on Saturday or fly to a remote tropical island things done. This is because these environments have less distraction. However, these ideas are not necessary, not very practical, and not very wise. Too many entrepreneurs make themselves dependent upon schedule changes or changes in physical location to be productive. Because of this, I’ve become a bit of an environmentalist for my clients. I’m not talking about reducing your carbon footprint or making the world a greener place, I’m talking about making the work environment a more productive place; a place that is conducive to productivity. Every day I show my clients how to build an environment that helps them not only feel less stress, but make more money. Some feel guilty about investing time and money in their work environment. However, a few wise investments can yield great benefits to your bottom line. Here are just a few of the many steps I use when showing my clients how to create a productive work environment: Sound – Are you able to effectively shut out noise during times when you do critical thinking work? Or, is your work environment assaulting you with many different random noises? I show my clients how to reduce the amount of noise in their workplace so they can be more focused. Sight – When you look around your work environment, do you see things that are relaxing, comforting and help you get in the mind of being productive? Or, are you seeing piles of paper everywhere that cause you stress? Do you see a dirty work environment that brings you down mentally, emotionally, and physically? I show my clients how to create a visual work environment that helps them focus on the tasks at hand. Touch – Is your chair comfortable? Are your mouse and keyboard placed appropriately? Do you have fast access to the things you need? Or, do you leave the workplace feeling frazzled because you spend too much physical effort in getting things done that should require no physical effort at all? I show my clients how to establish changes in their physical environment that enable them to get more work done with less physical effort.
