If you ski or snowboard, you know how rough the elements can be on your equipment and that you have to take good care of it. It's a fundamental rule of skiing and snowboarding that if you want your equipment to support you, you have to devote some time to caring for it. While this is obvious to pros, those who merely dabble in these winter activities often put themselves in the most danger. We'll continue to talk about a few excellent waxing and tuning suggestions so you'll have the safest ski and snowboard experience. If skiing is a new sport for you it's imperative that you realize how many ways there are to approach some things and the fact that not all of them are wrong. When it comes to waxing, sharpening and caring for your skis it's important to note that anything you do will likely help alot. The more skilled you become with waxing the better your skis will last between waxes. Sharpening your skis is a process you need to be prepared for when you are ready to tackle it, note that you should start with the sides rather than the bottom. You will get a more flat bottom surface this way. First hold a flat file to the edge of the ski while moving up one side and down the other. It is imperative to keep a flat position with the file on the surface of the ski. Naturally, there are some who hold a different opinion and advocate special files that are angled. However, we've found that as long as your as close as possible, then there's really no problem and all will be well. Sometimes the snow under your skis or board just doesn't cooperate when you get out there, and you want to be ready for this. It's no fun when this happens, but you can remedy the situation. Having base wax with you means that you can always do a wax job whenever you have to. Your skis or board will sometimes have the wax peeled right off their base by the ice. If you're prepared, however, all you have to do is do a fast wax job on the bases and everything will be fine. This really works, so give it a try. We recommend an all-purpose wax that has fluorine in it. What's so special about fluorine? This substance gives the wax the slick quality you want. The fluorine in the wax is what helps the ski from sticking to the snow. That's the whole idea, to slide and not stick. We can't expect all of us to be champions of properly waxing and tuning our skis and snowboards. It's simply a necessary part of winter sports. You have to decide how important it is to you to keep your gear in top condition. Even if you only apply some wax to your bases you'll be in better shape than if you did nothing. Or, you can make a habit out of skiing or boarding without wax, and learn the hard way!
