You should know different types of birth control methods available for you. Barrier method is used for preventing the entry of sperm into uterus and in this way preventing the pregnancy. You can use diaphragm, male or female condoms, contraceptive sponges and cervical cap for this purpose. Spermicide in vagina is also used for creating chemical barrier to prevent the entry of sperm. You should use this birth control method every time when you have sex. Condoms are the best method as they are easily available and cheap method and also prevent STD’s diseases. Many hormonal medicines are also available for birth control. Most of the woman’s choice is the oral contraceptive pills. These pills contain progestin and estrogen hormones which prevent the releasing of eggs from ovaries and produce some changes in the uterus and cervical fluid to prevent fertilization. Progestin –only pills are also available. You have to take them daily depending upon the pill you are taking. Pills also have many side effects which you should ask your doctor before starting them. You can also choose Patch method among other birth control methods. You can find it under the Ortho Evra brand name. These should be worn on any one organ including abdomen, outer arm, buttocks or upper body. It helps in preventing pregnancy by releasing estrogen or progestin hormone. This should be worn for three weeks of menstrual cycle and not on fourth week to have periods. In addition to these, you can use hormonal shots and vaginal rings as one of the birth control methods which also use production of hormones to prevent pregnancy You can also use intrauterine devices. These include copper and Hormonal IUD. Copper IUD prevents fertilization by releasing copper which don’t allow sperms to reach uterus or by preventing implantation of fertilized egg on uterus wall. You can use it for 5-10 years and this need to be put by your doctor. Hormonal IUD produces progestin hormone and prevents ovaries from releasing eggs. It can be effectively use for 5 years. Always ask for the side effects from your doctor. If you are not planning to have baby in the future, then you can go for permanent birth control methods. Woman can go for sterilization implant or ensure which blocks the fallopian tubes by developing scar tissue. Surgical sterilization can be used by both men and women. In women fallopian tubes are closed whereas men have to undergo vasectomy. Nowadays, emergency contraceptive pills are gaining popularity. This can be used by women after having unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. These are hormonal pills and should be avoided as far as possible because you have to deal with hormonal imbalance causing several other problems in body after taking them. Some couples also prevent having sex. That means they never do sex. This is the only method to have 100% protection from getting pregnant and preventing STD diseases. You can also prevent to have sex when you are most fertile during your menstrual period or using some barrier method at that time. For this, you should consult your doctor for knowing your fertile days. Always make sure to know the pros and cons of birth control methods you are going to use. You also need to prepare yourself for the side effect caused by them.
