The Power of Your Presence - Lessons with Ollie

What is the impact of your presence? Your personal presence has everything to do with what the world presents back to you – with how people respond to you. And it has everything to do with you how you think and feel about yourself. My whippet, Ollie is one of my greatest teachers. She has taught me much over the years. One of the lessons I have learned from Ollie is about the Power of Presence. Ollie has a powerful presence. At the same time she is gentle and playful, even tender and respectful. She loves life and most everyone she meets. When she wants to make a statement, to connect or to make her desires known, she does it very straightforwardly - and with her presence. I’ve been privy to this many times, often in the wee hours of the morning. It’s as if some presence wakes me up from a deep sleep. I open my eyes and there is Ollie standing beside me in bed, looking directly into my eyes with full engagement. The power in those big, brown eyes as well as her eye contact is amazing. There is no pawing, no whimpering, she just stands up beside me and looks at me with intention. She holds the eye connection for a few moments, then turns around and heads for the door. I follow of course without delay. Some of my most joyful times have been in Ollie’s presence when she is exploring some new nature trail. Her own joy pulsates from her. And it’s contagious. Ollie takes every opportunity to do what she loves. Otherwise, she sleeps! A perfect life formula don’t you think?! Ollie never tries to make a statement by barking. In fact, Ollie never barks. What she does instead is talk to me when she has something important to say. This happens on three distinct occasions. When she wants me to come play with her, she calls out to me enthusiastically and with intention - it’s in her voice. I usually come! And when I do she has the toy she wants us to play with between her front legs. Another time she communicates verbally is when she comes home from a grand adventure she has had with someone else. She runs from couch to chair, to me and back to the person she has had the adventure with, retelling her experiences with great gusto. And the third occasion is when I have been traveling and she hasn’t been able to come with me. When I arrive home, at the same time that she is wagging with her entire body, her proclamations of love and joy sometimes bring tears to my eyes. People take note of Ollie when she is out, they always have. She is beautiful and that’s a part of it but far from the biggest part. It’s the spirit of her presence. She genuinely and delightfully connects with people and never oversteps her boundaries by jumping on them. They love her attention!
