Many women may suspect that they are pregnant and want to take a pregnancy test to see if they are correct on their assumption. Sometimes they may suspect that they are with child, but still experienced a period. They may ask, “Can you take a pregnancy test right after your period?” The answer is that you can. However, it will most likely have a negative result even if you are pregnant. A home pregnancy test checks for the presence of one particular hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). The female body makes this hormone after the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus. This occurs about 6 days after the sperm merges with the egg and fertilizes it. Generally, a home pregnancy test will not show a positive result until about a week after a period is missed. However, if you think you are pregnant and desire to take a pregnancy test right after your period it will not hurt anything to do so. It is uncommon, but in rare instances, some women do have a period throughout their pregnancy. A doctor can administer a urine test, or draw blood work to see if a woman is indeed pregnant. Most of the time, home pregnancy test are very accurate.
