Don’t be fooled, as we age we are still children on the inside. It’s a shame that we don’t get to keep our youth physically. It all starts when our senses start to degrade, not our inner spirit. Most of us start poking fun at ourselves, because we get to shop for hearing aids and coke bottle glasses because our eye sight is also losing its swagger. It’s all part of life, and we can supplement our vision, and other senses as we handle the daily grind.
The most valuable sense we have taken for granted is our eye sight. It is the primary sense we depend on for survival. Unfortunately, our eyes are one of the first senses to dissolve unless we take action and be alert to the indicators that our vision is slowly making its way to blindness. Molecular degeneration is a huge variant that causes blindness. Molecular degeneration can occur at any time in our life whether young or old, but is more common amongst the elderly, making a rampage in the 50’s and 60’s. If the warning signs are properly identified the disease can be delayed or even stopped. What a blessing, to know you can extend the life of your vision by paying attention, and watching for signs of degrading vision.
The retina is the lifeline from our eye to our brain, and is also referred to as macula. When the macula nerve begins to become damaged then you may have Macular degeneration. This condition is hereditary and can be passed through the family. So if you are aware of family members loosing vision then you can prepare for Macular Degeneration. Even if family members have always had great eye sight well into their old age does not mean you can’t catch the disease, nobody is immune to Macular Degeneration.
There are a lot of preventative measures to adopt to reduce the risk of acquiring Macular Degeneration and one major way is based on food intake. The right combination of healthy foods and proper nutrients will keep your retina strong and resistant to degeneration. It’s almost like giving your eyes an oil change after 3,000 miles, right? If you can do preventative maintenance with your eyes and retina than you should.
One power food that will help improve your vision is broccoli. Carrots are also known to pack a healthy punch for vision. Green tea and oranges are also proving to be power foods to support vision. These fruits and vegetables coupled with the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish is a combination to bolster vision and give your eye the nutrients needed to maximize your vision. Broccoli is rich in lutein that not only helps the retina and the overall health of your eyes but also reduces the risk of acquiring glaucoma. If we don’t eat the right foods over time we might not know that Macular Degeneration is happening to us. If our vision starts to blur then the degeneration will already be in the works so it’s imperative to start adopting new power foods into your diet like fish and vegetables.
Everyone remembers their mother fussing at the dinner table for the kids to eat their carrots. “Eat your carrots or you’ll go blind”. That statement was a bit extreme but stems a lot of truth. Carrots are heavy with beta-carotenes that actually protect our eyesight, by keeping the eyes lubricated. Dry eyes only progress macular degeneration and the carotene is what we need to prevent dry eyes. Carotene also converts to Vitamin A that prevents us from getting nycltalopia. So what should we learn from this? Carrots are a super food that will keep your eyesight going. It’s adopting the food and seeding it deeply into our meal plans that are the hardest part.
Goji Berry, Spinach and Broccoli are a great combination of power or super foods to protect your eyes and make them last. The goji is a great defender and keeps cells healthy and blocks radicals. Goji is loaded with zeaxanthin and lutein that act as security guards and gets rid of excess or unwanted cells that want to loiter or camp out with the healthy cells.
The combination of broccoli and spinach are also packed with lutein and zeaxanthin. These leafy vegetables paired with kale and turnips will provide support to the goji and together all these super foods will protect and act as blockers to keep your eyes functioning properly and protecting the retina from disease as we age.
Bilberry is not a well-known super food amongst super foods but should really be the star of the show. Bilberry is the regulator or traffic cop that keeps all the components of the eye moving. Without bilberry out there circulating immune properties then there would be a lot of chaos surrounding the eyes. Bilberry has a very strong affinity for the retinal pigmented epithelium of the eye, the area affected by AMD. Naturalists like to include bilberry to treat AMD because it contains compounds called Pholyphenols and Anthocyandidins that protect the blood that circulates throughout the eyes and eye cavity. Bilberry is a key player for keeping the eyes operative with little outside influence that can further degrade vision. The blood vessels are clear and moving based on the bilberry’s nutrients alone.
Vitamin E is very important antioxidant and inhibits free radical damage and is utilized by the body to prevent degenerative patterns related to aging. Vitamin E replenishes thirsty cells in the body and keeps them full to maximize efficiency and proper functions of body cells. Balancing out meals with the super foods addressed to help prevent macular degeneration will also help prevent other diseases throughout the body. These nutrients don’t just hone in on the eyes but nourish the entire body. Science has proved that we can take care of ourselves and extend the life of our senses by eating properly and exercising frequently.
If you can’t incorporate these nutrients into your daily diet its worth a shot to do your best to eat foods rich in Vitamin A, E and omeg-3 fatty acids. Lutein rich foods like broccoli and kale. So choose your eye support carefully!
