A beautiful city located in the South East of Mexico, Cancun is a globally renowned tourist destination. Located in Quintana Roo, Cancun International Airport matches the growing demands of visitors coming here. The airport is nestled close to Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico close to its Caribbean coast. It is considered to be the second “Most Busy” airport after Mexico City International Airport. The IATA code of Cancun International Airport is CUN. According to the statistics, the airport handled 13,022,481 passengers in the year 2011. It was an increase of 4.7% in comparison to 2010. Flights to Cancun are steadily increasing to meet the growing demands of passenger traffic coming here.
Looking at the growing number of visitors coming to this city, it was decided to expand the airport. About 1500 m apart, the airport has two runways that are operational at present. These runways can also be used simultaneously. Besides these runways, the airport has three terminals used for various purposes. Terminal 1 is used by Charter flights coming from North America besides certain domestic flights. Similarly, some international carriers use Terminal 2 and the new addition, Terminal 3 handles flights coming in from North America as well as Europe. These days’, many cheap flights to Cancun are also plying their services.
Along with Mérida International Airport, Xoxocotlán International Airport, Cozumel International Airport, Veracruz International Airport and Villahermosa International Airport, the Cancun Airport is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste. For Aladin, Mexicana Link, Aerocancun and Mexicana, the airport acts as a hub.
With three terminals, the airport is able to handle international as well as domestic flights effectively. Out of these three terminals, two are presently operational and the third one is scheduled for remodeling. There are 7 gates in Terminal 1 and after remodeling it is going to be used for charter airlines. With 22 gates, Terminal 2 is currently operational. There are 11 gates on the upper level and 11 gates on the lower level. There are 15 gates in Terminal 3. In all, there are 47 boarding gates.
Terminal 3 is the latest addition to the airport and about US$150 million were invested by ASUR for its construction. As soon as Terminal 3 became operational, the capacity of the airport to handle passengers doubled. In October 2009, the tower and the new runway were also opened. In the north of the earlier runway, this new runway was constructed. It is 2,800 m long. With 97 m height, the new control tower is considered to be the tallest tower in Latin America.
