When water damage begins to spread into other rooms it becomes even more difficult to clean up and restore the area to its original glory. If damage has spread to many area’s it’s important to immediately locate the problem where the mess originally occurred. It’s important that one keep in mind that there are many areas where the problem could have originated. It could be from a leaking pipe, clogging in the bathroom or other faucet area, or even from exterior leaks that are allowing outside water to flow into your home or business.
Once you have located the source of the problem, the water should immediately be shut off in order to prevent any more damage from occurring. The next step would be to begin removing water from the areas affected using towels, water extraction equipment, rags, buckets or anything else you can think of that could help you to extract water out in an efficient manner. Once water has been removed, use dry cloths to wipe down any and all walls and surfaces in order to try and prevent the growth of mold. Make sure that the area is well ventilated. Allowing air to circulate freely will not only help to prevent mold, but will also help to prevent any sour odors.
If any debris has formed or if you have accumulated excess trash from one time use rags, be sure to get your hands on some industrial strength garbage bags. As you are removing debris, make sure that gloves, protective eyewear and protective clothing are worn in order to prevent injury or any other health risks.
The next thing that should be on the list to do, is to perform a thorough cleaning of the area using sanitizing cleansers. Again, it’s important to maintain a well-ventilated area both during and after the cleaning process. After the area has been thoroughly cleaned, you’ll have to give the area time to completely dry out. It is during this period that you should keep any eye out for areas in walls that feel soft to the touch or appear to have discoloration. If any damage remains after the cleaning and drying process, it’s important that you get in touch with a water damage specialist that can assist you with restoration and mold remediation.
