Colour healing has its roots in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, India, and China, and even lost Atlantis.nnHippocrates (C460-C377BC) defined man according to the four elements, relating male to fire (red), Art (yellow), female to earth (green) and water (blue).nnSir Isaac Newton(1642-1727) discovered how the colour spectrum is produced. By passing white light through a prism he discovered that the light was refracted or deflected into the colours of the spectrum. Newton concluded that light or colour, consists of waves, and each colour has a different wavelength and vibrates at a different frequency.nnAs colour wavelengths are in essence vibrations, colour therapy forms what is known as vibrational medicine.nnThe Hindu scientist D.P. Ghadiali (1873-1966) formulated the scientific principles behind the different effects that different colours have on the human body. He found that for each organism or system there was a particular colour that stimulated, and another that inhibited, it's functioning. Concluding that balance could be restored by treatment with the appropriate colour.nnA colour therapist can introduce the colour vibrations, which will attract to the person healing and balancing vibrations.nnColour can be used to balance energy, aid creativity and learning, release blocks and alleviate physical, emotional and mental conditions and speed up recovery after an illness or an operation.nnAs colour directly links to the subconscious mind, acting as a bridge to the visible world, we can use it to diagnose the root cause of a problem, treating and dispersing it at a deep level.nnSound, fragrance and thought waves are also vibrations and that is why colour therapy, aromatherapy and mind techniques such as meditation and creative visualisations are all closely linked.nnThree ways light is taken into the system are:n- through our eyesn- absorbed through the skinn- we also draw light in through a system of body energy centres, known as the charkas, which are directly linked to our nervous system. nnHere are some basic colour traits:nnRed - is the colour of life itself, of fire and blood, of danger and sex, and without it our lives would lack vigour, warmth, strength and passion. We need it in the food we eat, the clothes we wear and our physical surroundings in order to stimulate our nervous system, release adrenalin into the blood, and improve our circulation. We also need red to root ourselves in everyday reality and to give us a sense of security.nnRed is a very powerful colour and should not be used if you suffer from high blood pressure or heart problems, have a quick temper, or are feeling angry or upset, as it will only over stimulate you. You should also be aware that treatment with red should always be complemented by treatment with blue and green. nnOrange - is associated with energy and life, it acts both on the physical body and the intellect. Wear orange to lift your spirits if you are feeling down. Use orange in your study room to boost creativity. Too much orange may lead to complacency.nnYellow - Yellow is associated with vigour and vibrancy. Wear yellow to help enhance your self-esteem. The colour yellow relates to the rational mind and clear thinking. Use yellow in your study room to enhance concentration, or in your dining area to help stimulate your digestive system. Too much yellow may make it hard to calm down.nnGreen - is associated with nature, balance and harmony. Wear green to balance your emotions. Use green in your family room to strengthen harmony within the family. Too much green can be too calming when you need to stay alert.nnBlue - is the colour of the sky and the sea; looking up at a cloudless sky or gazing at the sea can often still the mind and soothe the spirit. It is no coincidence that when we want to "get away from it all", we often choose to take a holiday where we can gaze at limitless expanses of both sky and sea for hours on end, becoming so relaxed that we lose sense of all time passing.nnIf you are feeling low or cold, or there is a tightness or stiffness in your body, you should avoid this colour.nnIndigo - is associated with intellectual ability and insight. Wear indigo to help enhance your intuition. Use indigo in those rooms which you use to quiet yourself.nnIf you are suffering from mental illness or SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder or are disturbed by paranormal phenomena, you should avoid indigo, as it will only exacerbate the condition.nnViolet - is the colour of transcendence, of mind over matter and the higher self over the lower self. It is the colour of the divine inspiration, which is channelled by healer and artist alike. It is the colour often worn by senior clergy.nnWear violet if you need inspiration, or if you want to step out of the past and look to the future. Use violet in rooms where you meditate. Too much violet may not be a good idea for people with mental, alcohol and drug related problems.nnWhite - represents purity and is associated with spirituality. Psychics and healers use white light to channel healing to those in need. It can also be used to meditate on.nnFull spectrum white light can be used to treat people suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) some symptoms of which include desire to sleep, general fatigue and depression.nnFor further information and consultation quotations please email colouryourworld@holisticworld.co.uk
