When it comes to running a successful business, communications plays a major role in it…with both your employees and your customers. The right hand should know what the left hand is doing. It is no different if you have a home based business or online business. If you outsource any of your work, you need to stay in touch with the individuals or company that is doing the work for you. As far as communications with your customers, it is vital to your success. After all, most of your one time customers will become repeat customers if you stay in some sort of contact with them.

In the online business world, the way to do this is through social media or with an email list. Having an email list can make your business successful on its own. Continually emailing to your list keeps everyone informed to what you are doing and promoting with your online business. The people on your list start to become familiar with you and then continue to buy from you because they trust you. I wouldn’t recommend emailing to your list everyday, that becomes annoying to most and they may opt out of your list. Once per week in my onion is a good guide to follow. It keeps them familiar with you without over doing it. The social media route is even more of a communication avenue than an email list.

Through social media such as Facebook or Twitter, your customers can actually communicate back to you through posts or tweets. Again, when a person has the ability to communicate with the company or person that is selling the product or service, they are more inclined to purchase from that person. It is a proven fact that people buy from others who they “know” instead of total strangers…it is a trust factor that leads to this and with all the scams that are out there, I would do the same thing. Some “experts” think you should tweet everyday, even multiple times per day and while I think that is still to much, it should be done more often than emailing.

If you have a web site for your business (and you should), make sure there is a contact area for people to get in touch with you…at least an email address and including a phone number is even better!

So whether you have a traditional store front business or an online business, communications is a big part of the success of that business. Like I stated earlier, it doesn’t have to be an everyday thing, but the door always needs to be open and you should communicate with your customers or employees frequently.
