What is Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a medical procedure that is used to remove skin layers to help improve the skin's appearance. High powered beams of laser light are used to remove a scar's top layer and penetrate to the middle layers of the skin to help tighten and smoothen it.

This procedure is effective at minimizing a scar's deep and thick layers. Laser resurfacing enhances the production of collagen and stimulates the growth of new skin cells to replace the layers of a scar.

Uses of Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing can be used to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Crow's feet
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Sagging skin
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Wrinkles

Types of Lasers

Ablative Lasers:

Ablative lasers work by injecting an intense wavelength of light into the skin to help remove dead skin's outer layers. The underlying skin is stimulated to form collagen, which helps fade away wrinkles. Your dermatologist will then apply an ointment on the skin during dressing. New skin, which is tighter and smoother, will later be formed. There are two types of ablative lasers:

  1. Carbon Dioxide Laser (Co2):

Carbon dioxide lasers are used to treat skin in people with cancer, saggy skin, scarring warts, corns on feet, and moles. This method is not suitable for you if your skin is dark-toned.

  1. Erbium Yttrium-Aluminum-Ga et (Er: YAG)

This procedure is used to get rid of wrinkles that are on the surface or middle layer of the skin on the face, chest, or neck. Surrounding tissues suffer minimal damage from burns. Er: YAG is used to treat sun damage, acne scars, and pigmentation.

Non-Ablative/ Non-wounding Laser:

The non-ablative laser works under the skin's surface by stimulating the growth of collagen and skin tightening. There are 3 types of non-ablative laser.

  1. Pulsed Dye Laser

This procedure works by directly shrinking the blood vessels, which makes the skin appear less red. The method is used in the treatment of stretch marks, birthmarks, rosacea, vascular lesions, and broken capillaries.

  1. Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd: Yag Laser)

Nd: Yag Laser produces a high energy wavelength to help selectively destroy diseased cells. The method is used to treat pigmented lesions, spider veins, hair, and tattoo removal.

  1. Alexandrite Laser

This procedure uses heat to damage dead skin cells in a targeted area. Alexandrite Laser is used for the removal of tattoos, pigmented lesions, and leg veins.
