Those of you who have been following me for a while know how important I feel having a clear vision and goals that motivate you are.

Sometimes, though, we may have the most beautiful vision – with a timeline to match – and just don’t seem to be getting there.

If you would have asked me 10 years ago where I would imagine myself now, I would have said well established in a marketing career, married to a loving man and with at least two but probably more like four children.

Fast forward to now.

I decided along the way to leave my marketing career and start my own coaching and mentoring business, which I’m so happy about. Then I saw that someone I went to university with is now a Vice President of Finance. While this was never a goal of mine, it reminded me that I’m nowhere near as established in my career as I thought I would be at this point.

I’m still on the lookout for “the one”, trying to stay optimistic and hopeful and trying to focus on the encouraging messages from people I know while learning from but not taking personally those messages that tell me the 5 (or whatever number) reasons I haven’t gotten married yet.

So why am I telling you all this? Is it to say that setting that vision is pointless? That if you haven’t gotten “there” yet, that you should just give up?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Okay, so the timing may be a little longer than you would have liked. The road may be a little more full of twists and turns than you would have thought. Maybe there are roadblocks or detours and you have to rethink your next steps.

This is where you vision is most important of all!

Imagine that you are driving down the road towards a very important destination – your wedding, a reunion with friends you haven’t seen in years, an interview for your dream job, something you’ve been looking forward to for months or even years. One of the streets on your route is closed for construction. Another closes right before you get there to repair a water main break. The lights are out at the next intersection, so it takes longer to get through it.

Do you just forget everything?

Or do you try different routes, maybe roads or side streets you never would have even though of before?

In the journey through your life, do you give up at the first, second or maybe even tenth detour? Or do you get creative and come up with new ideas – new people to call, places to go and groups to join.

Where has the road twisted and turned in the road to your vision? And what can you do to keep going for it anyhow? Email me to let me know.
