We all love being in our comfort zone. It is called the ‘comfort zone’ for a reason. Sure.
We are all under the impression that we can put our best foot forward only in our comfort zone. Wrong. Believe it or not, it is discomfort that will help you perform better and not comfort. How, you may ask. It is simple. When you do things that you are afraid of, you grow. You learn new things and you use those things to perform better!
So how do you bring this to the workplace? How do you get out of your comfort zone professionally? The answer is actually simple. You try collaborating and working with those you don’t like. Oh, even the idea sounds incredulous, doesn’t it? Try it. It is for YOUR benefit.
Want more reasons to give it a shot? Read on.
Disagreement Brings New Ideasr
This is actually very simple. If you hire all those who think just like you do, what are the odds of fresh ideas being brought in? Zilch. The ideas that your employees bring to you will be those that you already thought of. There will be nothing new! If you hire someone who disagrees with what you do and brings in a fresh perspective, you will be able to look at situations in two different ways and determine the best way with ease.
Thus, you need someone who has a skill that you lack. You need someone who is your opposite. For example, if you have great socializing skills you should hire someone with zero socializing skills.
Innovation Never Comes from a Homogenous Groupr
Again, taking this point forward, think about being innovative. If all of you think alike where will the room for innovation be? Nowhere. You all will think of the exact same thing and implement it. There will be no room for great new ideas that no one has ever thought of before.
Thus, if you surround yourself with a heterogeneous group, you will have diversity of thought. People will think differently and you can use various skills to come up with one fresh, new, innovative idea!
The Fun is in the Riskr
Take a risk while hiring employees. Your risk might actually end up being the best decision of your life! No, I am not saying here that you should hire someone who does not qualify and who has no skill at all. I am just saying that you should hire someone who has the talent but that, which comes from an unusual background.
Talent must always be there but you should consider hiring someone who you wouldn’t generally hire because of a different educational background or some other such reason.
Understood? Go on and hire some risks, some people you don’t like, and some people who would never think like you do! Get uncomfortable.
Entrepreneurial Learning
Performance is helped generally by discomfort. You have to get out of your comfort zone and stretch yourself in order to perform better. This is why you should surround yourself with people who are not like you, whom you consider risks, and who don’t think like you. Heterogeneity is the key.
