How Economic depression causes disorder anxiety.
With the economy going so bad it is not surprising that anxiety and depression is increasing. Studies show that depression has been on the rise in the western world for many years. Many people have grandparents who told them about the great depression in the 1930’s but few if any thought we would ever experience anything as close as that. Our generation is the first that will do economically worst than our parents.
Disorder anxiety is a phrase we have been hearing a lot of lately, it is basically living in a constant panic condition. The loss of economic security is something that affects everyone and when a whole nation feels this insecurity it can really shake even those who have a strong faith.
The loss of trust in our banking system is something that an American probably could not ever conceive of before this current crisis. A bank is a strong symbol of the economic power of a nation. When Washington Mutual bank went down it really hit home for many people. The average person could relate to this bank, it was a neighborhood bank that symbolized banking in America for many. This is one of the reasons disorder anxiety has started to increase, many people can not get a handle on these critical times.
Wall street as well is a symbol of American economical power. It is home of the stock exchange and world securities are traded there. This decline of Wall Street has left some Americans feeling vulnerable and unsure of the future. The very names that we use to speak of finance are a clue to the surety we put in these institutions. We speak in financial languages where words like trusts, securities, and bonds are used to describe our capital. The very words symbolize a certainty that our money is safe. When this fails depression and disorder anxiety can increase.
This is similar to the attacks on America during 9/11,the nation had a certain sense of military security, and this was due in part to the fact that a foreign nation had never attacked America on its on soil. The attacks of 9/11 sent a message that America is not immune to the same worries of security that all our nations are conce
ed with.
London, England in the 1990’s had warning signs in their subway system for possible terror attacks. Signs that said not to touch any packages that were unattended were common in every subway car. 10 years later the same warnings are now in New York City subway announcements. The fear of national security was just the start of an emotional depression that was already spreading in the country.
Statistics show a rise in mental depression in teens as well as middle age women in the last 10 years. With the economy it is a feeling of powerlessness that causes the depression. We feel that it is beyond our control, each day we listen to news reports and wait for others to tell us if things are getting better or worst. We are not even sure how the failing economy will affect us in the long run as individuals.
We have always felt it was better to leave all the details in the hands of the financiers and bankers, in the hands of those professionals to protect our interest. It is similar to a person being cheated on, we feel that we have been done wrong. We should have been treated better than this. We trusted the banks to invest our money wisely and sometimes even to return to us a profit. We trusted that the stockbrokers we believed in would tell us exactly where our money was going and that in even the worst of times we would still not lose on a level such as this.
In regards to the economy, the feeling of powerlessness is increasing the already rising rate of depression in our society. Powerlessness is the feeling of no control and that is exactly what the financial crash has created, a feeling of no control. The uncertainty of wondering if this crisis will get much worse is still looming in the minds of not just Americans but of all industrial nations. Can it get worse? Yes it can get worst, what happened in the 1930’s can happen again. History does repeat itself and disorder anxiety is a consequence of this possibility.
This is one of the problems that are affecting those who are becoming depressed from the possible coming depression. It is the waiting, waiting for the latest news report on the status of the economy. Many Americans admit that they do not even know what the 700 billion dollar bailout would mean to the average working man or woman. What we do know is that we are told that things are bad, very bad and can possibly get a lot worst. The failing economy is beyond or control, no one knows how bad it will get and when it will end, this is a sure fire recipe for depression and that is exactly what has happened in the United States. nnn
