Sepsis is considered as a life threatening illness that can affect anyone which occurs mainly when the infection spreads into the entire body. Sepsis in layman’s language is simply termed as blood poisoning. A rough estimation of around 30% to 50% of Canadian population is killed with this deathly disease per day. Researchers have found several reasons for causing this life threatening condition. Being the most severe case of illness it is necessarily treated in the intensive care unit with antibiotics. It is very important to understand the pathogenic cycle and activity in the body that triggers sepsis.

Causes of Sepsis

Sepsis mainly affects those people whose immune system is not completely developed or those with weak immune system which is caused as a result of various ailments such as diabetes, HIV AIDS, small babies, cancer treatments of chemotherapy, surgical wounds etc. when the chemicals are released in the blood and the bacteria mainly triggers the condition. The sepsis bacteria can enter into the body from small knee scratch to more serious medical conditions such as pneumonia, urine infections. Sepsis also affects hospitalized patients due to factors such as bed sores, surgical wounds, infection, urinary catheters etc. In fact the sepsis bacteria enter into the blood stream through these infections and wounds which makes the blood septic or poisoned. Viruses and fungi also cause sepsis. There are various characterized symptoms related to sepsis.
Sepsis: Signs and Symptoms.

The most common symptoms associated with sepsis are inflammation throughout the body associated with fever and chills and severe shaking, low count of white blood cells. inflammation is characterized by creating small microscopic clots which blocks the nutrients and oxygen supply to organ failing to do so causes organ functioning failure. Continuous vomiting, palpitations and dropping pulse rates. The normal heart rate is 72 beats per minutes which exceeds to 90 beats per minute. Breathing problems which is 20 breaths per minute associated with diarrhea, decreased urination, low blood pressure and decreasing body temperature. Various other dreadful signs and symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, rashes on the skin, dark red spot throughout the body, extreme joint pain such as knee, elbow, back hips and ankles and eventual death.

Treatment

The sepsis patient must be attended immediately and aggressive treatment must be started to possibly save the patient. First most important thing is it must be diagnosed before the treatment starts. The doctors must first examine the blood for bacteria in blood or body fluid, white platelet count, blood pressure and too much acid in the blood. X rays and CT scans can help to diagnose the illness. Patients with chronic sepsis are kept in intensive care unit. The death rates related to sepsis is 20% caused due to organ damage. Antibiotics, steroids, injections can help treat the deadly ailment. Activated protei
C, vasopressors, and prognosis help to deal with sepsis. Steroids are effective in treating septic shocks and ARDS (Acute respiratory distress syndrome). Sepsis can be prevented by maintaining hygiene by washing hands and use of safe and immune surgical instruments in hospital to avoid cases of sepsis.
