People can apply simple steps to make their homes more energy efficient and help save the planet at the same time. A typical home should not spend more than $2000 a year to pay for their electricity bills and doing so is an indication that their homes are not energy efficient and are wasting significant amounts of power. The world still has a long way to go before really cheap electricity is made available so deciding to turn your homes into energy efficient structures should be the way to go – and the first steps you should do is to apply these few simple tips. Elements of Energy Efficient Homes People in cities such as Houston have the power to select their energy options and this would be an important part in their goal of saving Houston Electricity or whatever provider they have in their own areas. But before you can really start saving Texas electricity you must first understand the basic elements on how to make your homes energy efficient. The design of the actual building is a vital consideration as it can set how much energy you need to consume to make your home comfortable and healthy to live in. * Thermal Envelope This refers to everything in the house that isolates the living spaces from the outside environment and prevents it from being affected by outside temperatures. This includes the walls, roof assemblies, insulation materials, air retarders, foundations, slabs, windows and sealing. * Controlled Ventilation This section regulates the flow of incoming or outgoing air from living spaces such as exhaust fans and air vents. Such elements help control the humidity in homes and make living spaces more comfortable. * Heating / Cooling Requirements Heating and cooling of homes and water consumes the biggest percentage of Texas electricity. Energy efficient homes are designed to consume relatively small amounts of energy for their heating or cooling systems. In some green homes, solar power is used extensively for heating purposes. Texas homes that require air conditioning should use units that consume not more than 6,000 Btu per hour. Simple Ways to Save on Texas Electricity The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy states that making your homes more energy efficient can help you save up to 40% from your electricity bills. The more efficient your homes are, the greater the savings you can realize. The following describes some simple ways on how you can do this. * When you don’t want to sweat profusely inside your home’s living spaces, you don’t have to turn your thermostat settings to super cool. You can set the temperature down gradually until you reach comfortable conditions to avoid consuming more energy. * Chargers, digital clocks, electric pots, computer monitors that are left plugged into your power sockets the whole day can consume considerable amounts of energy if added up and can affect as much as 5% of your Texas Electric bills. Unplug these devices when not in use or use power strips to turn multiple appliances off. * People have the wrong notion that they can clean their clothes more effectively and kill germs at the same time. Use cold water with your washing machines instead and save up to 90% of consumed electricity. * Leaks and cracks on your walls, doors, windows and other parts of the house can cause thermal leaks that will put more strain on your air conditioning and thus consume more electricity. Use sealants and weather strippers to seal these leaks and prevent these unwanted heat transfers. * Use smaller pots that are large enough to cook your food instead of using overly large pots and burners. You will only need less heat and consume less energy when you use smaller pots. In a similar manner, using microwaves require less energy than cooking in a large electric oven.
