Ensuring That Grades are Meaningful & Not Merely Figures is the True Meaning of Learning

Grades are like an inseparable part of the education system in more ways than one. We grade our students in the assessments and projects, the colleges and universities decide on their next batch of learners based on the grades, and even the recruiters pay attention to the grades to assess the candidates.
But how meaningful are those figures in reality that are assigned to the students in terms of grades? Can students' efforts be truly quantified by such gradation? If not, then do the grades at all reveal the true goals of learning?
At DPS Kota, one of the most reputed schools in Kota, we strongly believe that the grades have to be insightful and perceptive to serve the real purpose of learning. Reducing grades to mere figures would amount to bringing the students down under the weight of achieving those glorious scores, and this would defeat the entire purpose of engaging children in the learning process.
With that being said, here's exploring how grading meaningfully syncs with the true meaning of learning.
Meaningful grading as a way to reveal learning and mastery
The foremost way of ensuring that the grades are meaningful lies in confirming that they reflect student learning and mastery over a particular subject in the true sense. As such, the assessments only matter as long as they are able to reveal the learning and efforts that have gone into it.
At DPS Kota, we ensure that grades remain meaningful for our young fledglings by first assessing what we want our students to learn, and thereby implementing different strategies to enable the students to reveal their knowledge to us in the best way. We believe that only when the educational institutions start giving and considering grades from this perspective, it would become a measure of students' progress instead of just a few figures on a report card.
Focusing on multiple attempts instead of redoing the tasks
While we are on the subject of grades and their value, it would be relevant to discuss the practice of making students take multiple attempts at improving the not-so-good grades.
When students are made to redo a test or assignment because it fell short the last time, our approach at DPS Kota remains to make the kids understand the significance of delivering high-quality work through revisions. This way, we believe, the students remain more directed towards strengthening their weak points. After all, the essence of learning is lost if the students start redoing something only for the sake of marks and not for the purpose of improving in the subjects of concern.
Grades can serve as the logbook for the educators
One of the foremost reasons why we consider grades to be important is because it serves as a logbook for us educators. At DPS Kota, positioned among the top schools in Kota, we use the grades to gauge the progress and growth of our students and accordingly consider the steps that can be taken to help them improve and do better.
We believe that grades are reduced to only digits if we simply hand them out to our students and leave it upon them to figure out the rest. At DPS Kota, grades serve as a way of introspection for us as well: "do we need to teach it differently?" "Are the students in need of more in-depth learning in this area?" "What can we do to make it better?"
The steps taken after the grades are handed out to students
There are mainly two things that make grades meaningful: one is our perception of them as an indicator of progress, and the second is the steps that we take afterward. And, when we speak of the steps taken afterward, we mean that the efforts are needed from everyone involved: us, the parents, and the students.
At the end of the day, grades should not be taken as the end of the road or the ultimate judge of the capabilities of the students. It's better to perceive them as a measure of the current state of knowledge and the efforts being put in by the students and the road left ahead in reaching their learning goals.
