They make all the difference in the outcomes that you realize. For example, if a company has a group of employees who are committed to its success, they are much more likely to think and act in ways that sincerely express the core values of that company when dealing with its customers. If that same company has a separate group of employees who choose whether or not to carry out company directives, they will do only what is necessary to avoid consequences for non-compliance. In our personal lives, we are inspired and passionate in our actions to the extent that we are committed to reaching excellent results. The keys here are inspiration and passion. People who are committed are, by definition, pledging the best of themselves to the optimal outcome because it is a reflection of themselves. On the other hand, people who live lives based on compliance merely go through the motions necessary to avoid negative consequences, and are far less likely to create results that reflect their best actions or thoughts, much less their personal life vision and great personal purpose. We need both commitment and compliance. The order in which they appear is the key to your success. Since commitment is in the realm of personal vision and inspiration, it needs to come first. It empowers the entire process with the possibility for creativity, growth, and excellence. The next step is compliance with the process that commitment creates. Too often, people and business cultures stress compliance because it is easily measurable. If commitment happens without passion, then you will have mediocre results. The key to a successful relationship between commitment and compliance is having the intrinsic accountability of the compliance step present without eliminating the creative power of passion from the commitment step.
