You just finished a great workout; your heart is racing, you are tired and short of breathe but these symptoms are expected for the situation. You embrace these feelings knowing that in a short time they will go away and you will feel fantastic for accomplishing such a great workout. The strange thing is a sufferer of anxiety feels the exact same symptoms as described above but the underlining feels are vastly different. When the workout is complete you can feel amazing, powerful, and happy. But sufferers of panic attacks feel sad, distressed, overwhelmed, and lonely and lost just to name a few. Without seeking help for anxiety disorders these feelings can and will be debilitating. Most articles focus on the physical impacts of untreated anxiety but without seeking help for anxiety there are some major emotional consequences that can as harmful if not more harmful than the physical consequences. Here are a couple of emotional consequences of untreated anxiety: • Irritability: A victim of anxiety has feelings of anger towards themselves for feeling the way they feel, for not being in control and for not being able to “shake it off” These feelings will manifest and be projected as anger towards others. At a time when a victim needs loved ones to help with anxiety the irritability is pushing them away. Thus there is a vicious cycle of being alone, sad and depressed. • Depression: Depression and anxiety unfortunately tend to go hand in hand due to the imbalance of a hormone called Serotonin. Serotonin is found in the brain and influences how a person feelings. Sometimes it is labeled the “happy hormone” because people lacking in this hormone tend towards depression. During anxiety attacks serotonin levels become unbalance which is why depression and anxiety go hand in hand. • Emotions of Derealization: Derealization is the perception that the rest of the world seems unreal, foreign, or just strange. Victims experiencing this emotion go through periods where it appears as if they are not living their lives but are watching as spectators. These emotions usually indicate the emergence of some other psychological disorder; General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) as well as many personality disorders. • Onset of Suicidal thoughts: The most severe and urgent emotion experienced with anxiety is the thoughts of suicide to emerge. Studies have shown that people who suffer from anxiety disorders are far more likely to attempt suicide than those who do not. Help for anxiety is so crucial for all sufferers of anxiety especially to proven the sufferer from reaching this point in their emotional state. These are a few of the many emotional consequences of not seeking help for anxiety disorders. Make the decision today to learn and find help for anxiety.
