AN HOLISTIC APPROACH TO MENTAL HEALTH

The old paradigm of treating ‘symptoms’, i.e. the end result of a much deeper-seated problem, must be questioned. Conventional medicine and psychiatry certainly have their place but surely as a short-term measure rather than as a permanent life sentence?

What the majority of people need first and foremost is an understating, non-judgemental ear and plenty of time to talk! I have found that much Healing takes place during a Consultation when the Client is allowed to explore the origins of their ‘illness’ and see how it has affected them on a personal level. This process enables the person to make all important connections between historical life events and their current complaint.

Many women are being ‘treated’ for chronic Depression which stem from major life changes such as pregnancy and childbirth, relationship difficulties and bereavements or social problems such as isolation, poor housing and financial difficulties. Practical help to resolve some of these issues, plus on-going advice and support, would make a huge difference and be far more effective than a long-term prescription of anti-depressants or tranquillizers.

Other women with mental disturbances relating to the effects of physical, emotional and /or sexual abuse are having their true DIS-EASE, i.e. fear, guilt, anger and self-blame, suppressed for the sake of convenience and social acceptance. Their distress is often interpreted as attention-seeking or manipulative behaviour. There are too many women who have been in the psychiatric system for years and years who have never been asked, ‘When did your symptoms begin and what was going on in your life prior to that time’?

It is simple. We are Self-Healing Beings and all signs of illness are merely our attempts to restore equilibrium. Sometimes, we get a little stuck and this is when some form of Talking Therapy, plus Energy Medicines such as Homeopathy and Flower Essences, can help to resolve internal conflict and negative emotions.

Flowers especially seem to reach deep within the psyche, bringing unconscious emotions and attitudes to the surface and into our awareness. Once acknowledge, it is easier to understand them and subsequently let go of inappropriate patterns of thought and behaviour. Flower Essences are powerful tools in the processors of transformation and self-development. As old traumas are released, positive virtues such as love, joy, faith and courage are unlocked so restarting a sense of harmony to Mind, Body and Soul.
