Once you acquire a new Great Dane, you need to consider how you will carry out the training of your Great Dane. While training your Great Dane is always important, it's vital if you have small children in your home. It's not that Great Danes are ever considered vicious, but more that they think of themselves as being a lot smaller than they actually are. A mature Great Dane may very well resemble a horse living in your house, and when a Dane that lacks proper Great Dane training jumps up on you in greeting, you could take a hard fall. Children who are jumped on by a Great Dane can find themselves facing serious injury. This is only one reason for why you need your Dane to undergo proper Great Dane training. While it's certainly not for someone who's timid, it is definitely necessary to get your new friend ready for a new home. No Jumping Allowed Great Danes happen to be very agreeable towards people, and they are always wanting to leap up on you to say hello. When the Dane is a puppy this is obviously not a problem, but a full grown Dane who thinks it is still the size of a puppy can be a major problem. One of the first lessons you will want your Dane to learn is how to stay down on all four feet. You start this by making sure the dog is rewarded when it stops itself from immediately jumping up on you, especially when you first walk in through a door. When you tell your dog to get down, and he listens, reward him with a treat. The key is to be consistent and make sure your dog is understanding what you want it to do during Great Dane training lessons, and you'll find it's easy to teach it to stay down and not jump on you or others. Housebreaking Your Dog You also want to be sure that your Great Dane training includes teaching your Dane where to attend to his business. If you have plans for your dog to be inside a lot, you'll need to train it to know it needs to go outside when it needs to potty. The key to house training is knowing the warning signs that your dog has to go out. When your Dane begins to sniff about or seems to take up a squatting position, that is the right time for you to take him outside. After it has gone to the bathroom outside, be sure to reward it's behavior with lots of praise or treats. Once more, you must stay persistent with the way you train your dog and ensure he understands what you are rewarding him for. Great Dane training is not hard, it just requires consistency. It is easiest to accomplish if you start the training from the first day your Dane enters your home. As the dog gets older, and it starts to look as if you have a horse in your house, Great Dane training might not be quite as quick and easy to accomplish.
