Adding to the number of candles to represent each year in a person’s life seems to be a more recent modification of this tradition. It is believed however, that the number of candles not only represent the number of years in the celebrant’s life, the candles are also meant to remind the person of all the blessing he’s received. Time has permitted people to deviate from tradition however, and people now can mark their special days any which way they prefer.
