The chief source of HCG, also called human chorionic gonadotropin, comes from women who are pregnant.Among weight loss products, HCG diet drops are apparently the most popular now. Because HCG is kind of a "pregnancy hormone," it must be some type of sex hormone, right? Sometimes dieters wonder if HCG drops will make their body think it's pregnant or have other sexual effects.

Just because pregnant women are the source of HCG, it doesn't mean HCG is a sex hormone. Your questions will be answered once you know more about hormones and what they actually are. Folks might have been mistakenly thought that all hormones are sexually related. All a hormone does is deliver chemical messages for the body. Hormones are like the jack-of-all-trades of the human body. They can do many jobs required by your body, including blood sugar levels, water retention, sleep—and stimulating the production of other hormones.

Of all the hormone types, HCG does not belong to the sexual category at all. Did you realize that HCG is actually made of protein? It's not a sex hormone—it's a peptide hormone. As soon as the fetus implants and starts to grow within the mother's uterus, it starts making HCG. One of HCG's jobs is to cause the production of another hormone—progesterone. Progesterone helps the baby get the energy it requires by building blood vessels in the placenta. The fetus's early growth, and in fact its very survival, is directly caused by the production of HCG and progesterone. Basically, without HCG, it would be impossible for a woman to carry a pregnancy to full term.

Although HCG is to successful pregnancy, it has another function—it also helps overweight people lose weight, as discovered by Dr. ATW Simeons. The other function of HCG, which is closely related to how it triggers the production of progesterone, is to access the mother's stored fat deposits and release it into her blood stream. Even if the mother can't keep anything down due to morning sickness, or if she's just undernourished, the effect of HCG ensures that the mother always has enough food for the growing baby.

So would you still wonder whether HCG is a "sex hormone" after you've discovered that what it does has nothing to do with sexual matters? The process of accessing stored fat reserves is the same in women and men, and it's activated by HCG drops just as during pregnancy. Men can take HCG diet drops with full assurance that they will remain 100% men. Your stored fat supply is released into the blood stream where it becomes available for energy consumption; that's all HCG does.
