This can cause a great amount of pain and discomfort that your stomach does not experience as it is coated with a special lining not found anywhere else in the body. nnMost individuals suffer mainly because of foods that they eat but some who do not overindulge still wonder why they experience heartburn. This is due mainly to specific foods that act as triggers such as highly acidic, spicy, oily or gas forming foods. Of course it can also be aggravated by drinking carbonated or fizzy beverages. These types of drinks can increase the pressure in your stomach add to the bloated feeling. Drinks such as cola can actually harm the stomach lining and cause other problems.nnMonitoring your diet is one of the first suggested treatments recommended by most doctors.nnIf you take any prescription medications then these can also be aggravating the situation especially when taken on an empty stomach, so make sure you always read the label. Many people experience nighttime heartburn as they simply eat too close to bedtime. It is recommended that you eat 2 to 3 hours at least before going to bed. nnIf you are looking for other ways to alleviate heartburn then Ginger Root has always been a popular alternative remedy as Ginger can absorb acid in the stomach and also has a calming effect. Bitter herbs such as goldenseal, wormwoods and gentian root are also very effective and can be taken as liquid extracts or in gel caps before you eat. nnSlippery elm can soothe a sore throat as it contains mucilage, which swells when in contact with water. It is thought that this mucilage coats the esophagus to treat your throat irritation. This herb is frequently found in throat lozenges. It should be noted that no studies have been conducted linking slippery elm to heartburn.nnAnother home remedy that seems counterintuitive, yet is very effective, is to drink a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Simply stir up to 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water and drink it slowly. It may burn slightly, but the relief should be nearly immediate for most people.
