If you recognize the signs of depression and feel you have become depressed after experiencing the loss of a relationship break up then it is important that you take steps to treat this problem. Depression is a serious mental illness and should not be left untreated. Here are some things you can do to help depression after a break up.

There are many avenues you can take to help depression after a break up. It is important to note that if your depressed feelings have been present for more than a month or two and your lifestyle has been significantly impacted by them you should consult a medical professional for help, whether that is your doctor, psychiatrist or psychologist.

Here are some simple things you can do on your own to help depression after a break up:

1. Don't isolate yourself. Isolation only feeds the depressive state. Keep a schedule of social events whether that is attending a prayer service or coffee with friends. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you are keeping a regular schedule of seeing supportive people so you are not alone.

2. Eat well. This is not the time to start a fad diet. Just eat healthy. Don't binge or starve yourself. Your body needs the appropriate nutrients as you are going through this emotional healing.

3. Start exercising. This could be as simple as taking a walk three times a week. Start slow and build up to more aggressive activities that will get your blood pumping. The effects of exercising on your mood will be astonishing. You will feel better about yourself just knowing you are doing something healthy.

4. Volunteer your time. Giving of yourself can be very rewarding and make you feel wonderful. It is also a way to meet like minded people that may share your convictions.

5. Create an adventure. Sometimes we become so engrained in our day to day routine that we forget there is an entire world out there waiting to be explored. Take a vacation or simply drive to a neighboring town that you haven't visited before. A change of scenery can do wonders for your state of mind.
This is a short list of simple but effective things that you can do to help depression after a break up. Try one or try all of them but be consistent in your actions against depression. It may not improve over night.
