When employees at a small business have a low wellness rating, the risk of illness or injury rises (as does the number of sick days taken) though currently, there is an equally pressing problem for businesses of all sizes: virtual presenteeism. The latter essentially occurs when workers blur their professional and personal lives, often continuing to be available online after work hours to managers and clients. One of the main causes of this phenomenon is ubiquitous, 24/7 connectivity; another is the absence of wellness programs within companies. It is estimated that presenteeism costs American businesses around $160 billion per year. What steps can your small business take to prevent physical and mental illness during the current health crisis and to show support to employees so they feel happier and more fulfilled as part of your team? Embracing a Wellness Program Stress is high in current times, with CNBC reporting that mental issues such as depression have tripled in the US since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. Around 20 million people have filed for unemployment, and those that do still have jobs are worried about the effects of the outbreak on their employment status. This is especially true among workers in small businesses in strongly affected industries such as tourism and hospitality. Wellness programs are a solid investment because they work, especially if they involve physical activity. As expressed by HR Director, 96% of employees feel more motivated and less stressed after exercising. Your wellness program need not be too expensive or ambitious. It can involve outdoor yoga sessions, the creation of personal nutritional plans for staff, the encouragement of a work-life balance, the suggestion of downloading specific apps such as Calm, Headspace or Breathe. Health Screening is Key A key component of wellness during times of crisis and more peaceful times alike, is health screening. The discovery of health conditions (including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, fatigue, depression, and anxiety) early can boost productivity, promote a positive environment among workers, and provide treatment before conditions get worse. Many of these conditions are preventable by making lifestyle changes such as being more physically active, consuming a Mediterranean-style diet, and proactively tackling stress through activities such as yoga, Tai Chi, and mindfulness meditation. The New York Times reports that many companies are contracting the services of labs to conduct PCR tests. Usually, staff is tested once a week (or even more frequently) and testing is accompanied by other measures - including social distancing, contact tracing, the use of masks, and the like. Establishing a Sick Leave Policy Establishing a sick leave policy will not only make your current team happy, but also help attract top talent, since having this type of policy in place shows you have an authentic respect for the work-life balance. It will also ensure your current and prospective employees that in times of crisis, they can take the time they need to restore their health without a fear of losing their job. Small businesses with a small budget can consider taking out a short-term disability plan, aimed at easing the financial burden when employees are unable to work because of illness or injury. If you do not have the budget for it, you can shift the cost to employees via payroll deductions. A typical short-term plan covers betwee 60% and 70% of the employee’s earnings, often with a cap on the amount paid out. During times of crisis, illness /injury/absenteeism are more likely to ensue, with stress levels on the rise and depression and anxiety also higher than ever. Small businesses can do their best to preserve a good working environment by adopting a wellness program that suits employers and staff. Health screening, testing, and the establishment of a sick leave policy can also put workers at ease, as can respecting each worker’s need for balance in their professional and personal lives.
