How to Cure a Broken Heart

Every day thousands of people are hurt by break-ups, divorces or the death of a loved one. Some seem to plummet into the abyss of broken hearts and others appear to brush it off and go on. So what’s the difference between these people? They both feel the hurt acutely. It may be only a matter of how they heal themselves.
nnThere are several ways to get through loss. Some of it is highly interactive, and some of it is more private. Tailor it to yourself. In other words if you are a more private person, you may think your broken heart is for you alone to heal. A more social person may go out with others to feel better. But there is likely a combination of both that is healthier for you than sticking to one technique.
nnFor the Private Person
nnThose who are more introverted may prefer techniques like these:
nnChange Routines. This helps set your mind up to change your emotional state from its broken-hearted condition. This simply means doing things in a different order: put on your socks after you put on your pants, brush your teeth before you brush your hair if you normally do these things the other way around.
nnWrite in a Journal. This is a very important technique in the healing process because writing gets to the deepest part of your emotions. Try logging on to a writing therapy site and get “prompts,” or suggestions, on what to write. Sometimes you can join a forum and share these writings if you want some feedback. Extroverts also sometimes enjoy this.
nnListen to Music. Find something that you consider uplifting and listen to it as often as possible. Give yourself some nice variety, and listen to some new music as well.
nnFor the Extrovert
nnGoing out a lot is sometimes an option for the broken-hearted extrovert, but it has its hazards. Try some different kinds of human interaction.
nnTalk to Your Family and Friends. Call them together and announce what has happened to you. Some extroverts feel a huge weight lifted from them. Explain whatever you wish during this time, and don’t exclude children unless they will benefit better from a private conference.
nnGo to Concerts, Sporting Events, etc. No bars or restaurants. Often at bars and restaurants you will see couples together, and it may make the pain worse. Besides, you may be tempted to drink. Alcohol is not a good drug for a broken heart—it’s a depressant and should be considered…well…depressing. Introverts often enjoy concerts, sports, and other events as well, but often in smaller groups.
nnGo to a Comedy Club. Invite your friends to go out on the town and have a good laugh. You do the planning so you can participate in a positive activity, then, send them an invitation that’s so intriguing they can’t refuse! Pour yourself into a positive activity! Introverts would enjoy the comedy as well.
nnRemember that you will not get over it quickly. The longer your relationship with the lost one, the longer it will take to heal. Be patient with yourself.
