Everyone of us at one point or another may need relationship counseling. Some people think that relationship counseling is for couples, while in reality all couples-to-be, family members, employees with their employers, and clients with their professionals can make use of it during troubling times. In fact, it should not even be restricted to troubling times. Couples who would like to enhance their relationship, for example, can also go for it. This article will describe seven easy steps you should follow to get relationship counseling. 1. Give priority to the counselor that you are already familiar with and one who knows your family history. This person will normally be better equipped to deal with your family problems. Still, make sure that s/he is not too familiar with the family. The whole point is to get an outside perspective. 2. If you can't find this person, ask friends for recommendations, particularly those who had counseling themselves. However, you should be cautious. What works for other people, may not work for you. 3. If you still can't find one, check the Internet. Search counseling directories. Use your zip code to narrow your search to those counselors in your area. You may consider online counseling, but this option is not recommended by many experts. 4. Once you find one, make sure you are comfortable with him or her. Would it matter if the counselor is male or female? Single or married? With kids? Race and religious orientation? You need to consider these points because you don't want something to prevent you from speaking freely. If you are not certain, ask about them and call them. You may also check their Web site and their office. You may also consider checking relevant forums and discussion boards online and ask there. Also, check customer reviews when available. 5. Check their credentials. The area of expertise should be relevant. However, you should not overlook other factors such as experience and style. 6. Make sure that you can afford this counselor. Different counselors have different fee structures. You should expect to pay about 100 USD per hour for one session. And you may attend about a dozen sessions. If you find that you cannot afford this counselor, you may consider asking him or her to recommend one. 7. Always remember that the counselor's job is to facilitate your reconciliation. S/he is not going to solve your problems per se. They will make their best to allow you to communicate with each other, give you the necessary tools and guide you. They will give you the key to open the door, but you will have to open it yourselves. Finding the right counselor can be tricky. If you don't, you risk wasting money and valuable time in your relationship, and probably more.
