Like any hobby at times hydroponics can get a bit expensive. In this economy it is hard to see why any gardener would pluck down hard earned cash but with a bit of math it is easy to see that even a small hydroponics garden can make economical sense. As well, there is the health benefits of eating fresh ripe fruit. I normally eat a couple of leafy vegetable meals like salad a week and with your own hydroponic garden you know where the food comes from. Just one type of lettuce is boring so you can opt for a mixture of different leafy green vegetables. Grocery stores often try and stock vitamin rich produce but it is often easier to grow it on your own. It often times turns out to be cheaper too!
The question is how can a small indoor hydroponics garden supply the same quantity and quality of mixed greens that a grocery store can? As well, is it possible to build a hydroponics garden without spending more than you would at a grocery store. In this essay we will answer these questions among other ones. We will build a complete hydroponics garden including growing lights and in the end you will see it is not too complicated at all. To start with you need a couple folding tables and then cover them with some type of table cloth. Place the tables under hung up grow light fixtures, preferably LED grow lights. Then place the ebb and flow trays on the table cloth. Next place all of your house plants in the near the ebb and flow trays.
First though, you need to soak the growing cubes. Let them soak in a pH 5.5 solution for an hour or so. Next place a few seeds in the growing cubes about a quarter of an inch down. You should place about one seed per centimeter. Now wait a couple of days and your vegetables, in my case lettuce, will start to sprout. The hydroponics plumbing comes next. Get a bucket with a lid and drill three holes in the lid. One is for the fill line, one for the overflow line, and a tiny one for air flow. The trays should be pre drilled for fittings at your local hydroponics store. Simple attach the various lines together and you should be good to go. There are many diagrams on the internet that can help you out if you get stuck.
Finally, we need to add nutrients. To start off with add your nutrients to the reservoir at the seedling rate. To water the garden all you need to do is simply connect the fill line water pump and the trays will begin flooding. Then disconnect the water pump when the trays are full and the water will drain back into the trays. You should dump out your reservoir about once every two weeks. It only takes three weeks before you can start harvesting plumb lettuce. All total it should cost about $20 a week to keep your hydroponics garden so it really is not a big investment.
Having your own hydroponics garden may seem complicated at first but it is really not. A hydroponics garden at home allows you to reap the benefits of summer year round. If you are looking for a new hobby why not try a hydroponics garden?
