Why Use a Breathalyzer? If an officer suspects that the driver operating a motor vehicle is driving under the influence of alcohol, the officer may ask the driver of the vehicle to submit to a Breathalyzer Test. Submission to a Breathalyzer Test is voluntary, but the legal consequences for refusing the test may be very costly. The Breathalyzer Test measures blood alcohol content (BAC) as based upon the amount of alcohol detected on the breath. A simple, easy-to-use device is designed to measure alcohol content by means of a deep-lung breath sample. Reliability of BAC Readings As more information is learned about the Breathalyzer and factors that can influence the results of a test, we now know that the breathing pattern of the individual undergoing the test can greatly influence the accuracy of the reading. Of even greater interest is how blood alcohol concentrations can change significantly depending upon when in the breath cycle the reading is taken. Factors that Can Potentially Discredit the Accuracy of a BAC Reading Among the numerous factors that can invalidate the accuracy of a Breathalyzer test include improper test administration, outstanding physical conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, burping, vomiting, hyperventilation, aerobic environmental causes, and RFI or Radio Frequency Interference. Studies Show How Individual Breathing Patterns Influence Breathalyzer Tests The results of a Breathalyzer Test can be easily influenced by the breathing pattern of the individual undergoing the test. Studies have shown that individuals who hyperventilated for a period of approximately twenty seconds immediately after drinking decreased BAC readings by ten percent. Conversely, studies have also indicated that holding the breath for approximately twenty to thirty seconds before exhaling actually increases the BAC reading by more than fifteen percent.
