I cannot do everything! Indeed, right now I must simply do just a little bit at a time. I’m passionate. I WANT MORE. Yet I’ve learned to ACCEPT. Indeed, I’ve found my attitude and perspective of acceptance helps me move forward from wherever I am. Maybe not to where I want to be right now– but in that direction! So however slow, at least I’m go the right way. You see, recognizing that is important to me. Because realizing I’m going in the right direction lifts me up. That perspective helps me encourages myself to keep on keeping on with passion despite setbacks, obstacles, distractions and otherwise attractive alte atives that could keep me from accomplishing my dreams. Okay, so you’re probably not facing all the challenges I’m facing. But the part about doing everything? Hey, that’s true for you. You cannot do everything. Accepting that simplifies your life. Oh, I don’t mean holding back! Your passion, your dreams, lived fully, really do matter. But I do mean accepting in the sense of controlling your aspirations because much of life is going to be out of your control. I’ve found that learning to accept your situation is useful. I’ve learned that controlling the urge to get everything done under a timeline that might not be possible really does help in moving forward. Yes, there are times when quitting make sense. But quitting something that matters to you simply because you did not race to get it done under some timeline that you aspired to… well, excuse me for being frank, but that’s nonsense. If something matters to you and you can do it? Does it really matter whether it takes X days or Y days to accomplish it? Sometimes, yes. But there’s another perspective. There’s this: will the world benefit enough from what matters to you to do that the timing is at least a tiny bit irrelevant? Do you dare to want your heart’s desire enough to make time to do it? I do. I’ve learned to accept that I cannot do everything. The corollary to that is that I’ve learned to accept that my timing isn’t in my control. Timing involves more than my input! Indeed, how much of my input is available on any given day is way beyond my control right now. I’m healing. I’m facing challenges. I’m slow. Here’s the thing. You’re not perfect, either. So, you’ll have stuff to face and stuff that’s out of your control, just like me. Especially on days when you simply cannot do the steps that would make things go faster. What’s the solution? Use attitude and perspective to help you move forward from where you are right now. Dare to slow down so that you can do what you can do and so that you can maintain your focus! Because when you allow yourself to do that (slow down maintain your focus), you can choose. That’s right. You can choose! For example, you can mindfully choose which small steps you will take today and which you’ll trust yourself to get to another time. You can choose to learn to reorder your day. You can get yourself to take one step — the one next step you need most that’s within your grasp. In fact, you’ll get the chance to build a graceful response that may well give you a competitive edge. Because you’ll get the chance to find what FITS YOU. Yup! You’ll become more effective rather trying to run faster through your day to get everything done. When life puts unexpected challenges into your day, you’ve still got to figure out what to do next, just like any other day. Though it’s tempting, simply trying to run faster to fit more in? Well, that may not be the best choice. How you learn to maintain focus on your goals during challenging days may define whether you get the outcomes you’re looking for. Because there are situations where it’s better to accept letting go for the day. Yeah, I learned this the hard way. Many years ago, from health challenges. That’s part of why I’m sharing it with you here and now. Because here’s the thing, you don’t have to learn it the hard way. Yes! Figuring out when to push and when to scale back can be difficult. After all, building habits is important. You don’t want to lose the benefit of the good habits you’ve got in place. What I’ve discovered is that I can control my attitude and my perspective. I can use that to decide on a course of action. When a new challenge arises, I’ve found it’s often useful to respond by slowing down, maintaining focus, and looking for a different approach that fits within the constraints of the new challenge. That can give you a graceful option. Sometimes a new, overwhelming, challenge will require you put aside ALL your plans for a not in your control amount of time. Other times you’ll still be able to fit everything in when you slow down maintain your focus and thoughtfully choose what to do next from one hour to the next. I encourage you to dare to practice now! Pay attention to your attitude and your perspective today. Find little ways to move forward based on looking at different angles of attitude and perspective. That way, when challenges arise, you’ll be ready. As you practice, you’ll begin to have a natural response to change, stress, and challenge that helps you slow down when needed, maintain your focus whatever happens, and mindfully choose what’s next despite distractions. How to maintain focus for long periods of time will then come naturally because you’re already working on your attitude and perspective. How do you use attitude and perspective to maintain focus in life? Allow it to become a graceful dance. Allow yourself to slow down when you need to so that you can choose what’s next based on what best fits where you are today.
