I Would Go With the Flow... If I Could Only Find It

If this is the Law of Attraction, it doesn’t feel so good. I wish I could say it feels good to be home, but some days, re-entry is a b#&*h. rnWhen we left Florida yesterday afternoon, it was a balmy 75 degrees. When we got out of bed at home this morning, it was four. That’s right, 4 DEGREES. Fahrenheit. rnAfter waiting in line for over twenty minutes to check our bags at the airport, the counter agent graciously explained that we had missed the cutoff by about sixty seconds. Our bags would now be marked “LATE”, with bright green labels, thereby absolving the airline from any obligation to get them on the same plane we were taking. rnIt is hard to do the whole conscious parenting thing when the frustration is bubbling over and steam is shooting out of your ears. My younger son was getting worried about the unknown ramifications of MISSING OUR FLIGHT, so I focused on remaining calm. I was slightly successful. rnAfter waiting in line for another twenty minutes to get through security, we had to race like crazy people with our shoes untied and jackets trailing, to make it to the gate on time. Many thanks to the brave woman who stuck her foot between the closing glass doors of the shuttle and delayed its departure, so we wouldn’t have to wait for the next one. Without her valiant assistance, we really would have missed our flight. rnWhen we got home last night, we found a huge and growing puddle in the basement. The humidifier on the furnace was leaking. For the third time in as many years. rnWhen I got in the shower this morning, the water – despite the thousand dollar UV sanitizing system recently installed in said basement – smelled like a cross between rotten eggs and dirt. Now, presumably, I do too. rnWhen I got in the car to drive the boys to school this morning, the battery was dead. rnWhen I walked to the end of the driveway to pick up the mail, I found the mailbox propped on the snow bank. Apparently, the snow plow knocked it off its stand. For the third time this winter. Shall I go on?? rnEvery now and then, I have days like these... where seemingly nothing goes right for twenty-four hours or so. I used to look up into the heavens in despair and frustration and ask, “What did I do wrong?” rnThen I learned about the Law of Attraction and began to believe that I was attracting all this misery to myself, for some unknowable reason. Since I could no longer blame everything on God, I would send out these circular inquiries that shoot out into space and then boomerang back at me. “Why are you doing this? What, already??” rnMore and more, though, I see these days as a sign that I simply need to slow down. Stop, look and listen. rnPerhaps this is a signal – from God, the Universe, Me – that it is time for stillness. And silence. Perhaps I attracted this signal, because I needed it. Go with the flow. rnPerhaps it is a time to breathe. Goodness knows, I wasn’t doing much of it, racing through that airport. I was gasping for breath. And I was frantic. About what? Allow grace into your life. rnAs it turns out, our luggage made it home with us. Our house is warm and secure. The sun is shining and melting a bit of the snow. rnOur cats are thrilled to see us and showering us with love. rnThe furnace has been fixed and the mailman was kind enough to deliver our mail, even with the box propped on the snow bank. rnI still believe in the Law of Attraction. Just look around: We are alive, healthy and together. All is good. All is great. rnI might need to attract some deodorant, though. Just until I get that water system fixed. rnP.S. Maybe the conscious parenting thing is starting to take hold. When my children were telling a friend about our mad dash through the airport yesterday, the highlight of their story was the unknown woman who held the shuttle for us. It's nice to see them recognize the inherent goodness and generosity in the people around them.
