rnGAD, or generalized anxiety disorders, is a chronic disease marked by unreasonable worrying about normal everyday life. This is the most common anxiety disorder affecting elderly adults. Anxiety is practically always part of anybody's day-to-day routine. Families, jobs and other common events can cause us to worry. If your fears are so overwhelming that it is hard to go through a typical day, then you have a problem. People who have a generalized anxiety disorder can not stop dwelling on problems with family, friends, and work. These extreme feelings of apprehension can rule a person's day and last for half a year or more. Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Depression The irrepressible feelings are often accompanied by physical symptoms which include mild symptoms such as perspiration and headaches to more grave symptoms like difficulties falling asleep and muscle tautness. If you have a generalized anxiety disorder, you probably also feel unhappy. A person with GAD goes through a vicious cycle of apprehension and frequently feels depressed, and the pattern of worry and depression feeds on themselves. It is also often accompanied by other elements of social phobia such as self-consciousness and fear of being unable to escape in enclosed areas. I Suffer from GAD--What Caused It? Although many people want to know the causes of generalized anxiety disorder, it is still not fully understood. Research indicates that generalized anxiety disorder can be familial. While we may not know the principal cause, other causes of generalized anxiety disorder may be related to the use of drugs or a neurological imbalance. Chemical imbalances in the brain may also lead to the occurrence of this anxiety problem. Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder After Diagnosis Diagnosing generalized anxiety, or any form of anxiety disorder for that matter, would include a sequence of tests provided by a health care provider. You can not begin GAD treatment until you have been properly diagnosed with this disorder. During GAD treatment, the physician's first priority is helping the individual get back a normal level of function.
GAD treatment depends on the severity of the disorder, but would include one or more of these options:
  • Therapy - more specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which can include relaxation techniques, hypnotism and other active therapy techniques.
  • Medication -- SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) and anti-depressants have shown some results in treating anxiety.
  • Mental and/or Emotional Counseling
  • Self-help
Other Possible Problems Individuals that suffer from generalized anxiety disorders have a higher probability of also developing other mental disorders. Furthermore, GAD sufferers tend to have physical pain and illness that contributes to decreased social, physical and role functioning. When you have a nagging and irrational anxiety that you can not get rid of, you may find it tough to accomplish your daily routine. If you or your loved one is going through GAD, make sure to seek the assistance of a qualified therapist who fully understands this condition.
