Diabetes is rapidly becoming one of the most common diseases of the western world. Type 2 diabetes, which is more common than type 1 diabetes, is growing at epidemic rates and with serious complications such as heart disease, stroke and gout it has left researchers and doctors scrambling for answers as to what causes diabetes and how best to treat it. Yes, diabetes of both types can run in families and there is a genetic component to the diseases which may, or may not, be inherited. On the other hand, the majority of diabetics, of either type, do not have a first degree relative with the disease. The genetic predisposition to diabetes is fairly easy to come by. In both cases, there are probably many contributing genetic locations and the probability you will get the disease depends on which subset of the locations that have the disposing characteristic a particular individual winds up possessing. There also appear to be some genes which protect from the disease. Before identifying the possible victims of this deadly illness, it would be best to understand what diabetes is. Diabetes is a metabolism problem where the pancreas either fails to produce enough sugar or to produce at all. It can also be the case that the cells of the body are not functioning well that's why the insulin produced just passes out of the body leaving the body with little or no fuel to do everyday activities. Furthermore, there are many types of diabetes all of which have their own causes and proper management. In normal individuals food is broken down to glucose in the presence of insulin the glucose present in blood is utilized by body cells with the aid of insulin secreted by pancreas for getting energy to maintain optimal health. Diabetes is a condition which is signified by a higher concentration of glucose levels in the blood because person cannot utilize glucose due to deficiency of insulin secretion by the pancreas of the body. For diabetes type 2, what causes diabetes is that available insulin is not enough or it can be abnormal therefore it is not efficient. Factors like old age, obesity, lack of physical activity contribute to this disease. Actually, what causes diabetes is a never ending topic as there are a lot of factors that favor it and have an important role when the first symptoms are noticed. Thus, diabetes can occur at any age, beginning with childhood and ending with old age. Diabetes is almost similar to having cancer. If diabetes is not treated well, it can affect different organs of the body the same as cancer. Diabetes is considered to be as a silent killer due to its different signs and symptoms that sometimes can be overlooked by physicians. It is vital for an individual to have enough background with regards of this kind of deadly disease. The different symptoms of diabetes must be learned in order for an individual to become aware of the necessary changes that will occur in his everyday life.
