Is the new ABC series “Selfie” worth watching?

My interest was piqued when I saw the commercials for the new ABC series called “Selfie.” The new series starred Karen Gillan, a Scottish actress who I knew because she starred in my favorite TV show of all time, Doctor Who. It also starred John Cho an actor whom I knew from the reboot movie series Star Trek directed by J.J. Abrams.
I must say the writers of Selfie have done a good job of depicting the kind of person that our present social-media-obsessed-culture has created. Our social media culture has created a person who is unable to interact with others. Surprising isn’t it?

Selfie pays tribute to the classic movie My Fair Lady, which starred Audrey Hepbu
as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins. Gillan’s character is named Eliza Dooley while Cho’s character is named Henry Higgs. Selfie is an updated and modern version of the movie wherein the writers revised the storyline to where Eliza asks Henry for help in improving her character.

Eliza asks Henry, who is a marketing guru and rebranding expert for help. She wants help to rebrand herself from a person who has a hard time relating with others to someone who can have and make friends.

Not so long ago I spoke at a large convention when I met a fellow speaker whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. We hugged and I asked him how he was and what he was up to. He answered me then started texting on his smart phone. He continued speaking without ever looking up from his phone, which irked me. This continued for another minute or so then when I could not take it any longer I excused myself politely and left him to his texting.

A recent Deloitte Global Mobile Consumer Study reported that, the average 18- to 24-year-old checks their phone an average of 53 times a day, while 13% admitted to checking their phone more tha
100 times a day.
Now I would like to confess something. I have never admitted this before, but here goes, I don’t own a smartphone. True… I don’t.

I do own a flip phone. Those phones that have numbers on them… You may think that, that is so old and I am uncool, but hey, I’m actually happy that I don’t own a smartphone because I may turn into those people who are constantly glued to their phones. 15 minutes of waking up.

Me, the first thing I check when I wake up is my shopping cart. I’d like to know how much money I made during the time I was asleep. People may say that I am missing out, but I don’t think I am. I value and enjoy interacting with people so much more. I’d like to see people’s faces when they know that I am paying attention to what they are saying. I may be found uncool by others, but I’m happy with the results of what I have been doing. Anyway, going back to Selfie, I liked their pilot episode. I believe the script was well written and the actors did a good job of portraying their roles. Will the show last? Maybe… Maybe not.
