The suspension under the huge load is nothing more than the conglomeration of springs, bolts, shock absorbers, bars that separate the wheels from the rest of the packages. But is that really as simple as that? Understanding what it is and how it works, help you to maintain trailer.

According to the trailer design, a suspension system is designed to connect the wheels and brakes to the body of the trailers, and essentially absorbs the jerks caused by the uneven road surface. It also absorbs the noise while maintaining and handling the trailer behind the vehicle. With a simple explanation, a suspension system work with the other trailer accessories, preferably with spring. The suspension system traditionally comes with tempered metal leaves. Here are different suspension applications you will come across-
Leaf Spring Suspension:
leaf springs are still being manufactured in a large amount and prime choice to most trailer owners for absorbing the jerks from the rough road surface. Trailers, those are used to carry the waste to the tip mostly use slipper spring, the front part of which is anchored to the pivot point and the rear side against the chassis inside the metal box.
However, this is not recommended for heavy use. For heavy load purpose, the leaf springs are generally installed by bolts through the eyes of the main leaf at either end. The rear part will be attached to a pivoting shackle that is itself attached to the chassis. Simple bolts can be used for these attachment points through a bushing manufactured from some durable material greaseable pin or nylon.
Independent Trailing Arm Suspension:
With the passing time, the trailing arm independent suspensions have come within the budget of the mid-range trailer owners. In this system, there is no impact transfer has been found from the side of the trailer to another side. The wheels remain vertical throughout the travel, and a greater range of movement is available.
Air Ride Suspension: If you are looking for a variation on the basic trailing arm setup, where the spring load comes with metal coil, it is an air ride suspension. The load is placed by a pressurised rubber bag. It comes with a number of advantages, which permits the user to offer the control of riding at height and overcome the stiffness across the changing landscape. Reportedly, the air ride suspended trailers glide over the rough tracks. Though, it needs a supply of onboard supply of air from an air compressor or cylinder to ride across the height.

Independent Rubber Suspension: IRS or independent rubber suspension is a new range that comes lightweight and simple in the application during the installation. Within a hexagonal tube, there are 3 rubber elements, and with such a complete bolt-on system, it requires no latter adjustment. Its self-damping nature doesn't need any shock absorbers.
Lastly, choosing the suspension require expert advice from trailer accessories provider. So, if you want to replace the trailer suspension to change the capacity or if the spring type and size is not appropriate to the trailer, discuss the option with someone is knowledgeable before you invest your bucks.
