Keno is one of the oldest standing casino lottery games, and it actually doesn't originate from America. It comes from China, and man named Cheung Leung of the Han Dynasty set up a game akin to keno approximately in 200 BC. From the two hundred and fifty, only one hundred and twenty were put into use, and they were bi-levelled into eight characters for each of the levels. At the start, one hundred and twenty characters were used, and then this figure changed to eighty when the game became more popular in other parts of the globe, as the characters were more memorable. The Thousand Character Classic actually still remains a popular poem to learn to count with, as none of the symbols replicate one and other. Keno remained within China until the beginning of the twentieth century, although similar lottery games were being played in Europe, but none with the level of sophistication that Keno brought on. In fact, the word lottery only came into play in the year 1515 which was derived from an Italian word Lotto which means destiny or fate. When the Chinese refugees were brought to the United States, they formed communities and played Keno, which was when it started to catch on in America. At the start, no others would play Keno apart from the Chinese, but after a while it did catch on, and then became hugely popular. Keno was originally called the Chinese Lottery, but soon came to its new name we know it as today, "Keno". Gambling lotteries were actually banned at the time that the Chinese were playing, but they continued to play secretly. Gambling lotteries became legalised in the year 1931 in Nevada, and Keno was recognized by the Federal Government as a lottery game. The Americans became confused with the Chinese symbols, and decided to create their own way of playing the game with eighty numbers instead of eight Chinese characters. The game then grew to as we know it today, with technology and machinery taking over to make the game as neutral and fair as possible. This is the Keno History as we know it.
