A lot of men wonder whether pickup lines can really work on women. Yet when we hear the expression "pickup line," we tend to imagine some sleazy guy wearing a gold chain across his hairy chest. He's prowling a bar or nightclub, his beady eyes scanning the room for his next target.
Then he spots his next "conquest" and makes his move...he approaches her and uses some cheesy pick up line that causes her to groan (or throw her drink in his face...)
I'm referring to pick up lines like these...
"You'd better know CPR, baby, because you take my breath away."
"Can I borrow a quarter? [What for?] I want to call my mom and tell her I just met the woman of my dreams."
"Hey, can I borrow a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes."
"Are you religious? Cause you are the answers to all my prayers."
"Sorry lady, but you owe me a drink. [Why?] Because when I looked at you, I dropped mine."
"I'm new in town -- could you give me directions to your apartment?"
"If I could rearrange the alphabet, I would put U and I together."
"If I followed you home, would you keep me?"
"If this bar is a meat market, you must be the prime rib."
"Was your father an alien? Because there's nothing else like you on Earth!"
You actually CAN use a funny pick up line to approach women, and not all of them are that lame. I'll give you a few examples of pickup lines that I've successfully used to approach women. The "trick" is to follow them up with something more clever (I'll give you some of these "transitions" in a minute).
Would you touch me so I can tell my friends I've been touched by an angel?"
"Do you know karate? Because your body is really kickin'."
"Your daddy must have been a baker, because you've got a nice set of buns."
"You must be a hell of a thief, because you stole my heart from across the room."
(Note: Don't use this pick up line on women who are extremely attractive and KNOW it. This one is effective on a girl who is attractive, but is clearly NOT the best-looking girl in the place.)
Now here's the next type of pick up lines. You can call these ones...
Pick Up Lines That Might Get You Kicked In The Crotch
When you are approaching women, use this last category of pick up lines with extreme caution. A woman with a sense of humor might find them amusing, but you also run the risk of getting hit or having a martini tossed in your face. (Especially if her boyfriend the UFC fighter happens to be standing nearby.) Use them with caution...
"Do you know what has 142 teeth and holds back the Incredible Hulk? [What?] My zipper."
"That outfit would look great...in a crumpled heap next to my bed."
"Is that a keg in your pants? Because I'd love to tap that ass."
The Truth About Pick Up Lines
But are all pick up lines only good for a laugh? Do successful pickup artists ever use them to approach women and start conversations? I've written several popular books on
how to pick up women, and I've taught thousands of guys how to "break the ice" with women and seduce them with effective conversation. And personally, I think pick up lines are usually way too obvious.
I teach a style of approaching women that I refer to as "going under the radar". What this basically means is that you say (or ask) something clever when you approach women -- a comment or question that catches her by surprise and engages her attention, without signalling your sexual interest. Essentially, you're "breaking the ice" in a way that feels natural and casual.
I like to approach the girl and ask her a clever question, one that females are naturally going to have an opinion about.
Opener #1: "Quick question -- would you allow your boyfriend to go to a bachelor party if you knew there were going to be strippers there? Because my friend Jennifer is sort of freaking out about this right now."
Opener #2: "Hi, quick question -- I need your help to settle a debate. How long do you need to be dating someone before you change your status on Facebook from "single" to "in a relationship?" Because my friend Jennifer has been going out with a guy for a month and SHE thinks it's an exclusive thing, but he hasn't changed his "single" status and she's wondering if she should say something..."
These methods of approaching women are especially effective because they're based on what I call "relationship grey areas." Men and women tend to have their own ideas about what's allowed in a relationship, and what is unacceptable. Another example: is it "cheating" if a guy hangs out with his ex-girlfriend socially, without telling his current girlfriend?
The bottom line is, a good opener is going to make her WANT to respond. And if you're a confident, playful guy, this one always gets a fun reaction:
"Do I look gay? Because this dude was TOTALLY flirting with me in the bathroom a minute ago. Be honest, is it my shirt?" (Or, "is it the way my butt looks in these jeans?")
Those don't count as "pick up lines," really. But I'm not saying you should NEVER use a corny pick up line when you approach women.
I've actually used some of the pick up lines I mentioned above, and they led to a conversation and a successful result (either I got her phone number and saw her again, or slept with her that night).
It was because I poked fun at the fact that I had USED a pick up line! After saying it, I followed up with "I know that TOTALLY sounded like a pick up line...but I want to talk to you for a second and I couldn't think of what else to say. My name's Dean..."
Then from that point, I used my usual methods -- I asked a few "strategic" questions to get her in a fun mindset, and sharing information about herself...I used techniques like "Cold Reads" and "Hypotheticals"...and at all times, I stayed in control of the interaction and guided it down the correct path.
Sometimes a really corny pick up line can be a FUN way to start things off. It's all about knowing how to transition into the conversation, and never taking yourself too seriously.
And hey, this one has worked for me on many occasions...
"You're so beautiful that you totally made me forget my pick up line."
(Women always find that one cute and funny!)
