ABSTRACT
Most of us have often searched Google about certain diseases or certain discomforts, which may be just a mild pain in any part of the body. And boom!!! The search result will show you information that leaves us thinking that you might die the very next day.
When we feel pain in the abdominal region, we wonder which organ is impacted and what might be the cause of it. One such disease which causes severe abdominal pain as a symptom is Appendicitis.
WHAT IS APPENDICITIS
The appendix is a finger-shaped pouch that projects from the colon on the lower right side of the abdomen, and inflammation in this part is termed Appendicitis. Though this part has no role to play in our body, this condition causes severe pain in the lower right abdominal region. Usually, in most people, pain starts around the navel and then moves to the lower abdomen. As the inflammation worsens, the pain also increases.
In some cases, the inflamed appendix may rupture and can spread bacteria throughout the abdominal cavity; this can sometimes be fatal and lead to the condition called peritonitis. It commonly occurs between the age of 10 to 30. In males, the lifetime risk of appendicitis is 8.6 percent and in females, it is 6.7 percent. To treat it doctors usually prefer an appendectomy as removing it reduces the risk of being affected and the appendix has no function as such. According to Ayurveda appendicitis is caused due to the imbalanced state of doshas and mostly happens due to the aggravation of these doshas.
LET'S KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY IT
The main symptom of appendicitis is pain but the grade of pain varies according to the age and the position of the appendix. The other symptoms of appendicitis are swollen or bloated belly, pain in the lower right abdominal region which starts at the navel area and then moves to the lower area, loss of appetite, nausea, cough, disturbed sleeping patterns, vomiting, fever of about 99 to 102 degrees, and can't pass flatulence.
Some less commonly observed symptoms are dull or maybe intense pain in the upper or lower belly, back, or flank region. Patients may have difficulty in urination, can have constipation or diarrhea.
CAUSES OF APPENDICITIS
The cause of Appendicitis can be more than one and in many cases, the cause is not detectable. Hardening of the feces or some tumorous growth blocks the opening inside the appendix as a result infection may manifest and lead to inflammation along with pus. Other causes are infection in the digestive tract or some other parts of the body and inflammatory bowel disease can also be the reason.
It can also be caused due to having vegetables and fruits with seeds such as Cocoa, oats, barley, grapes, etc in excess amounts. Complications that appendicitis can cause is that if it ruptures then infection can spread in the abdominal cavity and can cause an abscess. In such a condition surgical removal and cleaning of the abdominal region have to be done.
As per Ayurveda Inflammatory diseases are caused due to the increase of pitta dosha in the body and since appendicitis is also an inflammatory condition, therefore this dosha has to be managed to cure the condition.
LET'S KNOW SOME PREVENTIVE TIPS
As we have read about the causes of appendicitis and one of them being the hardening of stool and difficulty in defecation, preventing this can prevent our body from being afflicted with this condition. It can be done by eating a well-balanced diet having lots of fiber in it, like pulses, salad, vitami C-rich food, etc. And keeping the body hydrated is also an important prevention method. Intake of drinks that contain caffeine should be avoided as it causes dehydration. Never suppress the urge of defecation as it can be the cause of other problems and can eventually lead to constipation. Mild constipation can be treated by including magnesium in the diet. Doing exercise keeps the body fit and keeps diseases a step away from you. And practicing yoga and meditation also helps in keeping the mind fresh and we all know a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Following a healthy lifestyle, this disease can be prevented.
