A loss adjuster is an independent claims specialist, whose prime work and duty is to investigate whether a claim submitted by a claimant or policyholder is valid i.e. whether they are covered by a policy, thereafter negotiating with the involved parties for a settlement. They are usually employed by insurance companies i.e. they work on behalf of insurance companies. They will also assist customers in preparing their claims but their loyalty is towards the insurance company which they are working for. They will work to minimize the payment required. In some cases, the loss adjuster’s work results in the settlement which is satisfactory to both the parties, and the claim gets simply settled without any kind of arguments but Sometimes, the customer can dispute thereby making the claim more difficult. Claimant can hire a public loss adjuster, who will solely work for him, not for any insurance company. They can sometimes settle higher settlements and like their counterparts who work for insurance companies. They help customers fill their paperwork properly. When a loss adjuster has been assigned to a claim they will need to visit the property to survey the damage, to make sure the property is protected/secure, and try to gather evidence, such as police or fire service reports and then conduct reviews. He puts all the information into a report. In the report, the adjuster provides an opinion on whether or not the insurance company is indebted to provide coverage, and what the recommended costs should be, given the terms of the policy and the details of the loss. Independent loss adjusters can work for multiple companies and have much more job flexibility. Loss Adjuster should always be quick and systematic, attend meetings with the claimant and insurers, investigate insurance claims completely and thoroughly, keep accurate and complete records of all claim activities, meet all promised deadlines, negotiate with the insurance company to receive the type of settlement the client wants, and strictly follow all company policies and procedures. Thus, the basic role of loss adjusters is to represent the insurance company involved in the claim by finding out the facts and then using them to negotiate a settlement.
