Making a Difficult Transition a Little EasiernnAs the baby boomers go through their “change of life”, their parents are experiencing a change of life as well! Whether they are moving into an independent living facility, assisted living facility, or just a smaller house or apartment, a minimum amount of “downsizing” needs to occur. Many seniors are unable to part with any of their treasured possessions, nor are they comfortable with the “weeding out” process. How can we, their children, make a difficult transition a little easier? While there are no easy answers, and one size does not necessarily fit all, there are steps you can take with your senior that will alleviate some of the stress. nnWhen it comes to sorting through years of accumulated clutter, many people, particularly seniors, need someone to hold their hand as they go through the weeding process. It is important to have an open dialogue, and to ask questions. Focus on what they are able to bring with them to make their new living quarters feel like home, and help them decide how to distribute those items they are unable to accommodate in their new space. Emphasize the joy of giving some of their treasures to favorite family members. And remember, most people do not like to be put on the spot! Leave plenty of time for the decision-making and “mulling things over” process. Sometimes seniors insist on putting their things in storage, in case they “change their mind”! You may have to go along with this idea, at least during the adjustment period, because the final decision is theirs!nnWhat about those seniors who do not have family members to help them through this transitional period? They would greatly benefit by enlisting the services of a Professional Organizer, someone who has the objectivity, patience and expertise to accomplish the task. in the shortest period of time, with the least amount of stress.
